There was a time when Presidents vetoed federal funding of canals and other infrastructure because they believed the federal government did not have the Constitutional authority to fund such projects.

Most of our infrastructure before FDR was privately funded.

Nah check my posts for the last year dopey, I've been for breaking up the union for years. The democracy ended already when the Republicans decided they are not bound by the Constitution and could decide to deny a president a Supreme Court appointment. It's ended. Once a political party decides there is no authority above their party line that isn't democracy anymore.

Speed limits. Technically, the States can set the speed limits on the highways in their states. But even that power has been hijacked.

The federal government has sucked all the cash from the states with taxes. The more power the federal government takes, the more cash it needs to suck away from the states.

The federal government uses the power of the purse to deny the states favors if the states don't dance to the federal government's tune.

So back in the 70s when the federal government wanted the states to lower their highway speed limits to 55 mph because of the Arab oil embargo ( we called them Arabs back then, not Muslims, which is actually more accurate), the federal government threatened to withhold infrastructure money from the states which did not cooperate.

I notice none of the liberals have been able to come up with a power the states still retain, so I will give them one.

Speed limits. Technically, the States can set the speed limits on the highways in their states. But even that power has been hijacked.

The federal government has sucked all the cash from the states with taxes. The more power the federal government takes, the more cash it needs to suck away from the states.

The federal government uses the power of the purse to deny the states favors if the states don't dance to the federal government's tune.

So back in the 70s when the federal government wanted the states to lower their highway speed limits to 55 mph because of the Arab oil embargo ( we called them Arabs back then, not Muslims, which is actually more accurate), the federal government threatened to withhold infrastructure money from the states which did not cooperate.

Infrastructure money. Looks like old James Madison was right about that when he vetoed a canal project in 1817. Smart guy.

The federal government returns money to the states via block grants and other funding methods. Go learn how things actually happen.

States still have the right to determine their speed limits. But you see the problem your ran to has is that not all state roads were built with state money, so the federal government can decide what the speed limit will be on federally funded highways.

I guess that's a power you conservatives know nothing about.
