Almost half of new electricity is clean and green

You know this is meaningless propaganda, but knock yourself out celebrating. Wind nor solar have displaced NOTHING. Because they are not PRIMARY grid generators.. Solar works most days for 6 hours, and wind takes wednesdays, thursdays, off and takes 4 hour breaks on the job. You do not ADD grid capacity with that kind of record..

What this news means to me, is no one wants to build conventional power anymore.. Not when the govt can DEMAND you idle your plant everytime the wind blows for 30 minutes... So we will be doomed to higher prices, more brownouts, and larger govt subsidies for those who produce no power most of the day. CONGRATS on all that Charlie.. IMPRESSIVE !!!!!!!

Almost half of new electricity is now clean and green - environment - 07 April 2014 - New Scientist

That's a lot of clean power. Almost half of new electricity generation is now renewable, and the costs of wind and solar power are falling sharply. It "should give governments confidence to forge a robust climate agreement" next year, says Achim Steiner, director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Still have a long way to go, though.

A press release is not fact. Plant a story on google and when people magically find the story they believe. Amen

Cheap Solar Power Is Fueling Global Renewable Energy Growth: Report

The share of total global electricity production generated by renewable energy is climbing, mainly because solar photovoltaic systems are becoming less expensive, according to a report released Monday by the United Nations Environment Programme and Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Wind, solar and other renewables, excluding hydropower, were 8.5 percent of total global electric power generation last year, up from 7.8 percent in 2012, the report says.

Instead of providing facts to support the premise of your thread you are only concerned about discussing what is found with a google search?

How about some facts. Prove the premise of your OP.

I find it astonishing that anyone let alone you, would on blind faith, accept a press release as fact.

More meaningless statistics. A 15MW solar installation produces at BEST 5MW average power over a year. Take that same installation and sell it to the Germans INSTEAD of New Mexicans, and it produces 3MW on the average.. Same with wind but WORSE..

So it's IMPOSSIBLE to quanitize the Global PRODUCTION of renewables with just the INSTALLED capacity. Which is what 90% of these Wizard of Oz press releases are based on.

So that 8% instantly becomes more like 2% or 3% of PRODUCED power globally.. Knock yourself out.. Light a doobie.. Blow a horn...

If you had read the article correctly, you would have noticed that they were talking about production actually generated! That certainly CAN be quantified.

BTW -- for the reasons I gave in my last post -- your OP never happened.. At least not according to the HuffPost version of the same story..

Cheap Solar Power Is Fueling Global Renewable Energy Growth: Report

Monday’s report, “Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2014,” released during Bloomberg’s “Future of Energy Summit” this week in New York City, says that renewables, not including hydropower, accounted for 43.6 percent of total global new electric generating capacity last year, preventing an estimated 1.2 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions from being released into the atmosphere

No 1.2 gton savings of CO2 -- No 43.6% of actual generator load..

When you chuck the weasel word of CAPACITY --- for PRODUCTION --- the numbers are CONSIDERABLY smaller.. 150MW of solar or wind "capacity" DOES NOT EQUAL 150MW of RELIABLE PRIMARY power "capacity"..

So this news flash is really more like (being generous) 20% of new PRODUCED electricity..

EDITED --- No Oroman. Words have meanings.. It is CLEARLY talking in terms of INSTALLED CAPACITY.. Not production.
PRODUCTION numbers USED to be posted publically. Not any longer.. And they are nothing to crow about.. It would be close to impossible to measure ACTUAL GLOBAL production in the same year as it was installed...

I love this paragraph. Oreo is doing a good olfraud...oh yeah, that's because he is! Oh well, they lie by omission all the time and here is the relevant section...

"Clean energy stocks had seen a 78 percent decline over four and a half years, bottoming out in July 2012 followed by a 54 percent gain in 2013 as solar and wind manufacturers regained profitability."

So, they LOST 78% and have regained 54% so that means they are still 24% DOWN.

Yup, they're doing awesome:cuckoo:

Silly Wabbit. They are NOT down (or out)... The premise is that all this stuff got SOOO cheap that they are only down because of COSTS and NET sales.. Not installed capacity..

IOW --- It's a blow-out going out of business fire sale... Limited time only, end customers only -- cash, no returns..

Solar Power Continues Explosive Growth

Solar Power Continues Explosive Growth

The use of solar power as an alternative energy source is growing at an explosive rate, according to recently released industry reports. In the US, the growth was recorded at more that 40 percent from the previous year, with the total energy generated, exceeding 12,000 mw, while global capacity of energy from photovoltaics exceeds 100 gigawatts. The explosive growth rates, make solar power the fastest growing form of alternate energy, moving it ahead of other energy sources such as wind, nuclear, coal and gas.

The figures complied by the Industry Association, and GTM Research indicates that solar may have become a viable alternate that can be adopted for everyday use. There is now enough capacity in the US to power almost 2.5 million homes, with there is huge potential for the addition of even more capacity, as a tipping point has been reached. The president of the Solar Energy Industry Energy Association, Rhone Resch says that in the past 18 months, more solar installations were completed, that there were in the previous three decades.

The majority of the installations were large projects, while 17 percent were installed in residences. California leads the country, with more than 50 percent of all the new capacity, succeeded by Arizona, and North Carolina, and together the three states, with New Jersey and Massachusetts account for more than 80 percent of all the new capacity. The majority of installations in the Southwest made use of large mirrors known as heliostats that redirected the energy from the sun to a central generating station.

Annual market down; Return to Growth in 2014

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) released its 2013 market statistics today, with cumulative global capacity reaching a total of 318,137 MW, an increase of nearly 200,000 MW in the past five years. However, the annual market dropped by almost 10 GW to 35,467 MW, attributable to the precipitous drop in US installations due to the policy gap created by the US Congress in 2012. While 2013 marked another difficult year for the industry with ‘only’ 12.5% cumulative growth, the prospects for 2014 and beyond look much brighter.

“Outside of Europe and the US, the global market grew modestly last year, led by China and an exceptionally strong year in Canada. While the policy hiatus in the US hit our 2013 figures hard, the good news is that projects under construction in the US totalled more than 12,000 MW at year end, a new record. European installations were off by a modest 8%, but with an unhealthy concentration of the market in just two countries - Germany and the UK”, said GWEC Secretary General Steve Sawyer.

It's a perfect example of propaganda. The statement is true and factual but it is cleverly worded. Here it is again, try to figure out what's wrong with the statement " Almost half of new electricity generation is now clean and green". That's right, it talks about NEW electrical energy. It makes no claim about how much "clean and green" electricity generation adds to the grid. The clever wording leads you to assume that half of the electricity generated is renewable and that's what they want you to believe. The dirty little secret is that unsightly expensive solar junk and windmills still add little to the grid. It's all smoke and mirrors and we still rely on 90% old fossil fuel, nuclear energy or hydroelectric.

There no way half our energy is green. That is the most ridiculous thing I've read today.

I agree, if that is what it actually said, that would be ridiculous. Perhaps you should re-read it before you post (just to make sure you read it right).

The OP says "Almost half of new electricity is clean and green."

The OP doesn't say half of our energy is green.

There isn't any propaganda in the statement. It is a statement of fact. That you cannot read with clarity of thought is your problem. It isn't 'clever' wording: it is straightforward wording. As well, windmills are far from unsightly.

Solar windmills dotting a hillside are quite impressive; I've driven past many in various parts of the world. Solar energy is the most intelligent way to generate power.
