And before he could swap out to another 15 round mag, got stopped cold. The Cops did their jobs fantastic. No good guy with a gun would have changed anything. I can entertain that point as being a factor that adds to America's gun violence epidemic. But I would put the emphasis on the reasons why mental illness is playing a bigger part in America's gun violence, before finding remedies to reduce the problem. The cart can't be put before the horse and without an understanding of why Americans are much more prone to kill each other with their guns, there's no beginning in dealing with the mental illness. In other words, we deal with your #2 point first and my explanation on why killing in foreign lands causes Americans to view gun murder with impunity.

I didn't read your post thoroughly because when I see any suggestions of turning to religious superstitions as a remedy for anything, I just give up any hope of a rational discussion.

Any good that you suggest can come from religion is far outweighed by the factor I've mentioned above. Dwell on it if you must but we shouldn't allow it to gain any great importance in serving any mental help for Americans.

Take the points I've made as just factors that would need to become part of a solution, and not meant as single solutions standing alone.

If killing people with guns is to be considered a mental illness, then are Americans more likely to be afflicted with that particular mental illness than other peoples. I would give the question a qualified 'yes' that requires further explanation.
