Back in the day, 50'60s hobos and riding the rails were old school. The Beats and Kerouac...it became mainstream. Dylan's knocking on heavens door or the ballad of the Green Berets...

Homeless men were called "bums". As a matter of fact the nickname for the old Brooklyn Dodgers was "dem Bums".
