Police in Paris have shot and injured a man who tried to attack an officer with a hammer outside Notre Dame Cathedral.

The man attempted to assault the officer who was patrolling on the esplanade in front of the cathedral, said Cedric Michel, a police union official.

Witnesses said four plainclothes police officers, doctors and paramedics could be seen surrounding the suspected attacker, who was reportedly shot in the throat.

David Rahul Métreaum, a witness, told BFMTV he could see a “man on the ground who is not moving”. “There is a group of people from the emergency services around the man on the ground,” he added.

...The French prosecutor’s office said the counter-terrorism office had launched an investigation into the incident. Police said the area would remain sealed until they were confident there was no further danger.
