The only black in the senate was appointed by a female republican governor and then elected by a considerable majority in South Carolina. We got any blue state blacks in the senate? Then in 1962, Kennedy sent the troops into Ole Miss to force the University to integrate or as my Dad phrased it, "to force integration down our throats". Having lived there, also, I can vouch for what you said. Everyone I knew who voted Democratic before the 1960's is either a registered republican now or at least votes a straight republican ticket.
