I think a case can be made that the French were superior. The British Army was very much the junior service in Britain and its practice of officers buying their commissions usually led to it being poorly officered, although very well disciplined by its professional non-commissioned officers. British disciplinary practices were savage resulting in troops that would rarely break in defeat.British were the best trained and best armed in 1776, but a bunch of farmers kicked their asses out.
