Students in the city are also performing poorly on standardized tests.

Would anyone--mostly parents--in our society tolerate what it would take to get kids passing these tests?

Teachers would be willing, I can almost guarantee you that. Parents would hate it. It would involve parents bringing children to school who are READY TO LEARN.

A very bad teacher can contribute to the negative, whereas a very good teacher can change a child's life to the positive. BUT, posts like this make it seem like children come to school as complete blank slates.

They do not. I just looked; Chicago as a 33% married household rate. I am not saying that NO single parents can be good parents, but children who grow up in the home of their married, biological parents do best.

We have children come to kindergarten who cannot zip a coat, who have never sat at a table to share a meal, and who are not potty trained.

We have other children with two loving parents, two years of pre-school, and a library of books at home.

You can't blame the teacher for that.

Yep, I've had my G-Grandson in a learning daycare for 2.75 years and he starts Pre-K tomorrow.

They used to have the nation's best public schools back in the 70s 60s.
