Chicagos murder rate is not as bad as you think

Quit dealing in facts, facts mean nothing to them. They want to believe what they want to believe.

I thought posters would be celebrating the fact that Chicago's murder rate is on the decline

I guess you just can't please some people

Many of the city's murders are gang-related, leading to a high number of youth casualties.

what gets me is when i tell all these people that post stuff saying how violent and dangerous our streets have become because of gun violence.....i will say take away the Gang violence and this Country is one of the safest on the planet...many dont buy it......here in California they said if you take Gang violence out of the numbers the murder rate goes down something like 60-70 percent....

You know its bad when a top Mexican dealer tells us that US jails are a job fair to him.

Chicago's murder rate isn't nearly as bad as you think - The Week

However, for all the tragic stories and headlines casting Chicago as the Deadliest City in America, the homicide rate in the Windy City is actually on pace to end the year at its lowest level since the the early 1960s.

Chicago has retained its stigma as a city with an out-of-control murder problem in part because of the shocking nature of the crimes. Many of the city's murders are gang-related, leading to a high number of youth casualties. In the most high-profile case of recent months, Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl who had performed at President Obama's second inauguration, was shot and killed by a stray bullet in January.

Through the first four months of the year alone, there were 93 homicides in Chicago. But while that would seem to be a depressingly high tally, it was a 42 percent drop from the previous year. It also marked the first time since 1963 that there were fewer than 100 homicides over the same period.

Since then, the downward trend has continued. May saw an 8 percent decrease in homicides from the previous year, and a 31 percent reduction in total shootings. And through Sunday, there had been 76 fewer murders in Chicago this year than over the same stretch in 2012, a 34 percent decline.

Quit dealing in facts, facts mean nothing to them. They want to believe what they want to believe.

LOL this is rich hundreds murdered and Chicago had the highest rate for how many years and now a few less are killed and that is GREAT news? Remind us what the gun grabbers are doing about criminals having guns.

I thought guns were illegal in Illinois?

There you go thinking again. That must cause you some pain, eh?

I live in Illinois and own many guns. And being country folks we do a lot of hunting and have a lot of fun target shooting every Thanksgiving.

Guns are not banned in Illinois and most folks own them. We do not have a CC law but that is changing soon.

Class dismissed.

.

Are you in Chicago? Is gun control the same across the entire state?

We are talking about Chicago here and it may be different in other Illinois cities.

Well they have lost hundreds of thousands in population in the last 10 years. You'd think the murder rate would go down some. 2012 was a big jump for whatever reason.

Math must not be your strong suit. The rate takes population into account.

Chicago had a new police chief in 2012. For some reason the first year for each new chief has seen a spike in murders.

The country's murder rate is on the decline.. in spite of us evil gun nuts having the ability still to buy those scary 'assault rifles', 30 round magazines, etc

Yup Rightwinger is opposed to citizens having weapons and refuses to acknowledge that for the last 20 years gun related incidents are on a major decline but thinks he can protect his buddies by fluffy about Chicago.

Chicago has never had the highest murder rate. There are many cities you are more likely to be killed in over Chicago.

Just a thought but hey......

Why don't you grab your kids...or your brothers kids and go on into Chicago after dark and just walk?

Yup perfectly safe to cruise anywhere you want in Chicago no crime no violence no Highest rate of anything, After all Obama is from there, he would do something if that weren't true right?

So, the murder rate in Chicago is down from last year's rate.

Considering that Chicago is a liberal utopia, where they've ruled unchallenged for years, you would expect to see better results from their policies. They like to claim that gun control works and clearly it does not.

Never said that. Just pointed out that your claim of Chicago having the highest murder rate is wrong. I live outside of the city and wouldn't venture through half the city, even midday.

You're proving the OP's point, you know.

It's safe to assume you've never been to Chicago, right?

Also from the article linked by the OP.

It's also likely that Chicago's falling murder rate is reflective of a general downward trend in the nation as a whole. A preliminary analysis of crime data nationwide found that, through mid-May, the U.S. was on track to post its lowest murder rate since the turn of the century. Even if that pace doesn't hold up, Chicago's improving murder statistics over the past two decades still coincide nicely with a similar trend in the nation as a whole.

It's the type of empirical evidence that could weaken the arguments of gun-control advocates who claim the country's lax gun laws encourage gun violence.

We aren't talking about the Navy Pier or in and around Shaw's or Harry Caray's.

Does that answer your question?

Yeah, it is bad. 532 people were killed last year in chicago, population 2.7 million compared to the largest city in the US, new york, population 8.3 million, had only 414 homicides.

Then you must be thrilled that the rate is down 42% this year

Yeah, it's like being diagnosed with syphilis and later finding you only have the clap!

But that's not what you said. You said "into Chicago after dark".

Most of Chicago is fairly safe, with the exception of a few bad neighborhoods - not the other way around.
