This is becoming a trend throughout universities and colleges engaged in sensitive research. Profiling and surveillance will deter this.

Becoming? It is an OLD trend. I remember watching a program decades ago talking about how foreign companies like Hitachi would build centers on various university campuses where they could watch and oversee technology and research as it was happening to be taken, stolen, copied and used for their own.

This country has been bleeding through the gills for ages: Money, information, technology, you name it, for ages. Why do you think they all hate Trump now, he is tightening all of that up.

It's job justification for federal agents- don't even pretend we don't do the same to them- and others.

LOL- right- Huawie comes to mind- that Trump is threatening to stop here. And, btw, I did say "others" too.
Thats maybe the one exception

most techies believe chinese 5g is more advanced than western versions

and it should be banned in the west because it would be giving the CCP even more opportunity for espionage

Yep. I recall reading about a story that had occurred in the 1980's. Japanese executives would be given a tour of innovation centres in the U.S, usually in an effort to encourage investment in their company. They'd all sign NDA's of course and then be given the royal treatment for the day.

One particular Japanese company who had visited the U.S company suddenly came up with a product that was cutting edge at a moment when the U.S company was only a couple of months away from release. It was a complete copy, down to very original and unique specific features they developed.

The Japanese were First to Market, costing the U.S company untold amounts of revenue, and a steep loss on their R&D investment for that product. It turns out one of the executives used a micro camera and had rifled through some technical, internal only document that provided them all they needed to know about that technology.

Also, corporate espionage is a big deal. Paid informants who steal from U.S businesses. It has to be a multi-billion dollar industry and certainly the benefit/damages would be in the multi-billions.

These companies sometimes just steal consumer products, but what if it becomes serious high tech information related to warfare or counter espionage methods etc? Now you go beyond economic suffering into life and death.

LOL - Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) don’t mean shit in Asian culture. Try suing an Asian company over patents or trademarks.

I know for a fact that there are many Asian companies that if you send your drawings to them, they will build you a prototype. Then take your idea for theirselves.
