Common sense policy. Should we make learning English a prerequisite for attaining U.S.citizenship?

Should immigrants be required to speak English before becoming citizens?

How could assimilate without knowing the language? should we not have any semblance of American culture?
American culture is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world.
doesnt mean you dont learn the language so you can function with others,,,
There is no law claiming that you must learn a language and the US has no language law.
never said there was,, but kinda hard to function in a country you dont know the language,,,
We seem to do just fine the way it is and has been for over two hundred years.
They did not print up literature in Italian, German, Polish, French and other languages ....
Yes they did.

The process of naturalization to become a United States citizen includes a civics and history test which is obviously in English. To become a new citizen of the United States one must demonstrate a degree of ability in English. It’s not terribly difficult, but then many, many, many US citizens who are born right here in the USA do not demonstrate a great facility with the language. Most of you reading this are United States citizens simply because you were born here. No English test required. Lucky for you.

There is a powerful incentive for immigrants to learn English to get jobs and such but people over 50 have a hell of a time a leaning a new language. Should they be barred from citizenship because of age?

People over 50 can still learn languages.

It is already a requirement.

To become a U.S. citizen you will need to complete form N-400, but first you must make sure you are eligible. You are eligible to apply for citizenship through the naturalization process if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Are a Green Card holder
  • Are able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government
  • Have lived for at least 3 months in the state where you will apply
  • You have not spent more than one year at a time outside the U.S.
  • Have resided continuously in the United States for at least 5 years as a permanent resident immediately preceding the date of filing your application
  • Have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing your application
  • Are a person of good moral character

  • Are able to read, write, and speak basic English
Then why do we bother to print ballots and other government documents in languages other than English?

The solution is instead of printing all government form in multiple languages the government should just provide non English speaking immigrants a free copy of Babbel .When you learn a new language, you want to be able to actually use it. With real people. In the real world. Every part of Babbel is designed with that goal in mind.

Because the Left traditionally ignores the rules, and the right is afraid of media reaction should they appear culturally or racially insensitive.

Those "Learn Any Language in Just Weeks!" programs are basically scams. They can be diverting supplements to the very long-term hard work of really learning a language, but that's about it.

How about a desire to have people fully understand what they are voting for? How about the fact that there is no law or obligation of fluency in English to BE a US citizen?

When you immigrate you assimilate into your new culture.

That's not a magical transformation, and it never has been. Immigrants to America assimilate (unlike immigrants to Europe, for example), but it takes a few generations. Always has.
