It is interesting to see that the same-sex marriage law passed NZ parliament with support from both National (Conservative) leaders and from ACT (libertarian) leader John Banks:

Act Leader and social conservative John Banks said he did not believe the God he believed in would think any less of him for voting in favour of the bill.

He also used the principle of freedom to guide him in his decision.

"When making this decision, I had to ask myself: ' Will New Zealanders have more freedoms as a result of this bill? Yes.

"Will freedom of religion be preserved? Yes.

"Will anyone's freedom's be taken away by this bill? No.

"Would the God that I believe in think any less of me for voting for this bill? No.

"That's why I support this legislation."

How many times do I have to tell you? YOUR idea of conservatism is not American conservatism.

I assume that most Americans are bright enough to understand that New Zealand is another country.

I would like to think that most Americans are also smart enough to know that both the National and Act parties would meet any standard of American Conservatism.

Your way of thinking seems to assume that conservatism occurs only in America and that the rest of the world are socialists - I am delighted to tell you that not only does conservatism exist in every country, it also exists in a more intelligent form than you are used to.

Yes, we are. And I am glad they passed the legislation, but you, you know next to nothing.

Is there a point to this bullshit?

The point is that some conservatives - even some libertarians - actually promote freedom.

If you ever see your high school English teacher you should ask for your money back.

The same could be said of your science teacher, your math teacher, your social studies teacher...or maybe.....oh hell, maybe it's just you who is incapable of learning and critical thought.

You're certainly one of the most ill informed twerps it has been my pleasure to interact with.

The topic here is same-sex marriage, in a country you claim to have lived in.

The term is "ill-informed", btw.

In that case this thread is in the wrong forum
It should be in this forum

Possibly so, but I feel the issue is more of interest to those following US issues, due to its relevence to current events in the US.

Amazing - 13 responses to far, and not one on topic!

Modern european conservatism: spending cuts and austerity, no central bank money printing to support irresponsible governments, reasonable abortion laws (legal until the 12th week), tougher immigration rules and no amnesties, debt-break amendments in the Constitution... They don´t look like left-wingers

And most of them still oppose same-sex marriage and adoption: even a majority of UK Tory MPs voted against their own government´s bill

In fact, pro-gay conservatives from NZ (or Sweden and Finland in Europe) look like the exception, not the rule

Is New Zealand in America?

No.

Your own interpretation of what the word means is of 0 relevance here.

And New Zealand's interpretation of conservatism is of 0 relevance here either; since they are indeed NOT here in America. Who cares about New Zealand?

TK -

New Zealand is not the issue here - the issue is gay rights, and the fact that real conservatives in other countrie are in favour of freedom and rights.

Furthermore, what relevance does NZ's interpretation of marriage have here? Maybe they have a New Zealand Message Board somewhere. Check the name buddy, U. S. Message Board.
