What you seem to forget it that once we decided to NOT go the full quarantine strategy route, then the ONLY thing left is herd immunity, so we SHOULD have been trying to accelerate infection as quickly as possible.
That would have ended it a soonest and saved the most lives.
What we did by "flattening the curve", was to prevent it from ending, and giving it more time to spread wider, requiring the largest possible % of infection and death in order to achieve herd immunity.
The more quickly you achieve herd immunity, the smaller the % you need, because it is more localized.

"Flattening the curve" prevents any epidemic from ending, so causes the greatest death total.
The smallest death total would have come from accelerating the initial spike with deliberate infection of volunteers.
