Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin sought testimony against Jesus, but could find none. In a last-ditch effort to have him killed, they charged him with blasphemy. To have him crucified, they charged him with sedition. "He stirs up the people," they claimed. (Lk 23:5) Cue the Romans.
But not even Rome could find fault with Christ. Continuing their ruse, the Jews proclaimed Caesar their king (Jn 19:15), asserting their citizenship, insisting that Jesus be silenced.
The Jews didn't crucify, but obviously had no qualms with its use in this case.
