The problem with a place like Venezuela, along with many others, is that it has a history of government corruption. It's difficult for government to be beneficial for the people when the government is, in fact, ripping off the people. A welfare-state system of governance might work fine in Denmark because they have a tradition and culture of following the law. Running such a system in Venezuela and expecting that it will work is a fool's errand. The only way to fix some of those governments is to crap it altogether and start all over.

Which is the path the US is heading down IMO. Might take another 50 years...
