Just off the top of my head, I think it has to do with liberty, maybe diet and psychological issues that go unattended to, an ambitious, independent system in which you succeed and fail on your own (loneliness attached to this), and a violent culture of movies, music and media.

It could be worse, the murder rate (and general crime rate) in England is higher than yours, but they get close up and hack you to death. Probably laugh when they are finished.

The U.S. is 99 on this list. I suspect some of the lower ranked countries look better because they do not properly record criminal statistics.

1 Do nothing and accept daily gun violence as a normal part of American life.

2 Regulate the sale of guns using well funded laws with actual teeth.

3 Regulate the purchase of guns with well funded health care including mental health care.

Either way, the only one that isn't going to cost us is the first.

Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country. Yet there have been 430 people shot and killed, 2,184 shot and wounded, 2,614 total shot, and 506 total homicides this year alone.

The majority of those shootings were done by people who bought stolen guns on the street, stole them on their own, or acquired them from family members or friends.
