Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said a tax on miles driven 'shows a lot of promise,'
'The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it. It's not anymore, so a so-called vehicle miles traveled tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call, could be a way to do it.'
The Dems will lose the tax revenue from gasoline when they ban gas cars and mandate electric cars.
They want this tax to fund their $3 trillion infrastructure bill.

Lol, I take it you don't drive. What a moron. You should dress up like a Capitol policeman and get those hugs and kisses Trump wants for you.

Many states have already been eyeing this tax with the advent of electric cars for some time. Trouble is, they are having trouble figuring out how they can implement it without losing the gas tax--that is a cash cow. The feds already tax fuel at a rate of 18.3 cents/gal for gas and 24.3 cents/gal for diesel. If they implemented a mileage tax for all they would have to take into account the weight of the vehicle as that would have a direct bearing on the damage done to the infrastructure. All the while they would have to find an equitable way of determining the new tax so that they could keep gas taxes.

Makes sense

You have to pay for the roads you use. As long as they reduce the gas tax

Already do. Nevada raised our gas taxes 30 cents a gallon 2 years ago to help pay for road improvements. Don't need no stinkin' Fed's raising it furthur.

There are federal Highways, State Roads, County Roads and local roads.
All need to be paid for

Unfortunately, the American voters give them power all too often, and then they do things that cannot be undone quite often. You can't unring a bell and unringing what DemonRats do is never a thing.

Hell, Eisenhower could have rolled back the New Deal, and have made SS private (and people would be getting far more monthly benefits if they had done it right). But he and a Republican Congress punted that last opportunity away.

When did that become the federal government's responsibility? We have 50 state governments and numerous territories, don't we? Is there someone reason they can't be responsible for their own infrastructure?

Each pays for its own roads and infrastructure
Local, County, State, Federal
Each collects taxes to do so
