A rather long video, but very relevant to our Oregon and Washington coasts. One of the methods of discovering past mega-quakes in the Pacific Northwest is examining turbidites. That is detritus left from undersea landslides.

Damn, that piece of sky barely missed me--can I borrow your tinfoil hat?
Damn, you are just as stupid as your posts indicate you are. A lot of people died because this danger was not realized. And we have the same kind of danger on our Pacific Coast.

Well ... the first threat will be the earthquake itself ... all the flatland west of the Cascades is recent alluvial deposits ... that kind that liquify during strong seismic events ... Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Eugene ... maybe as far south as Redding ... potentially major damage to all things made by the hands of man ... bridges, dams, buildings all come down ...

Surprisingly ... the tsunami that follows will be virtually non-distructive by comparison ... all the major population centers between San Francisco and Vancouver BC are far enough inland ... the coast itself is where the mountains meet the sea ... so a 40 meter tsunami wave against a 50 meter cliff face is ... entertaining, not damaging ...

With each layer of disaster we add, we are reducing probabilities ... the whole "30% chance of a Cascade earthquake in the next 50 years" includes partial rips, which don't produce tsunamis, and only knock down buildings not designed to withstand earthquakes ... all critical infrastructure has been hardened (supposedly) for these segmented events ...

I know I know ... we only want to hear about the extreme event ... does the tsunami wash us away before the pyroclastic flows incinerate us? ... full rip events pop the volcanoes ... 700ºF at 700 mph ... we gonna be praying for water ...
