Now it is commonplace for right-wing Americans to say that only Soros’s corrupt influence can explain why their fellow citizens take to the streets. A typically sly report in the Washington Times said one in three Trump voters believed Soros paid protesters to join the women’s march on Trump’s inauguration day. Naturally, it did not produce a shred of evidence to support the fantastic accusation. That the gormless believed a straight lie was all the proof it needed.

Republican senators are now trying to persuade the Trump administration to cut support for Soros’s campaign to promote democracy and human rights in eastern Europe. Soros’s Open Society Foundation has no difficulty in showing that their Putin-influenced propaganda is riddled with errors . But a better riposte is to turn to Europe and see why democracy and human rights might need promoting. It’s not just Putin who goes for Soros. Macedonia’s former autocratic prime minister, Nikola Gruevski, has called for a “de-Sorosisation” of society, as the country’s right uses every trick it can think of, including the threat of street violence by “patriotic associations”, to stop the opposition taking power.

In Hungary, Viktor Orbán’s self-proclaimed illiberal democracy is threatening the Soros-funded Central European University. Its president, the former Canadian Liberal party leader and former Observer columnist Michael Ignatieff, is bewildered. He protests that he is running a university, not an opposition political party that might take Orbán’s power away.

I could go on. Romania’s socialist elite imitates Trump and claims Soros pays citizens to take to the streets to demonstrate against corruption. The supposedly reputable financial analysts at Zero Hedge claim Soros “singlehandedly created the European refugee crisis”. Steve Bannon’s Breitbart says Soros’s funding of Black Lives Matter was part of an agenda to swing the US presidential election. The European far right claims he is trying to destroy Christian white Europe by importing Muslim refugees.

Rather than go on, however, it is better to understand what is going on. When fighting foul movements, the question arises whether you should play the man or the ball. Playing the ball is the sporting thing to do. Lies have to be nailed. The factual record has to be defended. You should never regard it as a chore to insist on the truth. It is a duty, which if you shirk it, leaves the field clear for race baiters and dictatorial movements. This is why historians take the time and trouble to shred the Labour left’s claim that Hitler was a Zionist. This is why Soros’s supporters give journalists detailed rebuttals of the conspiracy theories that swirl around him.

Despite differences, GOP should defend Soros in Hungary

"The image of secretive billionaires undermining democracy by funding nefarious causes has been long associated with the political left, blaming the Koch brothers, for example, for the Tea Party movement and proposals to radically deregulate the U.S. economy.

The conservative response to such left-wing assertions? Living in a free society means that private individuals and organizations are free to fund causes with which others disagree.



Yet, when it comes to liberal billionaires funding left-wing causes, some on the right change their tune. Hence the claim from conservative circles that by funding liberal causes in Eastern Europe, George Soros, the Hungarian-born American investor-philanthropist, is “fomenting trouble for the governments of some U.S. allies and even interfering in their electoral process.”




Hence the right's acquiescence to new Hungarian legislation that would close down the Soros-backed Central European University (CEU) in Budapest. CEU is accredited in the U.S. and is governed by a board of trustees comprised mostly of Europeans and Americans, including former New York Republican Governor George Pataki.

We are not in love with a number of Soros’ political causes, either. The fixation of Republicans on the Hill on Soros’ misguided political preoccupations and arguable overreach is misplaced, however, at a time when first-order issues are at stake.
Eastern Europe and the Balkans face a serious dual threat today: Russian interference in the internal affairs of many of these countries — in politics, media and the economy — is on the rise.

This is occurring while political rights and civil liberties are on the decline, undermined by leaders across the region of unmistakable authoritarian bent. According to the Heritage Foundation’s Mike Gonzales, we should not be choosing between Soros and Vladimir Putin, as “both options are equally bad.”

We disagree.

Those who wish to defend free society — and conservative values! — have to choose their battles wisely. They must also be willing to distinguish between existential threats to democracy and issues that, while important, belong nevertheless to second-order concerns.

The first-order, existential challenge to democracy in Eastern Europe is coming from leaders such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán — once, incidentally, a recipient of a Soros scholarship — who mistake their substantial popular mandate for a free pass to crack down on dissenting voices. Under Orbán’s leadership, Hungary's democratic bona fides have declined in recent years, according to Freedom House.

As a prominent political activist and supporter of left-wing causes, Hungarian-born billionaire financierGeorge Soros has frequently been the target of smear campaigns, none more ridiculous than the claim (which first surfaced in November 2016) that he served as an officer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) in Nazi Germany during World War II.

The rumor made the social media rounds in late 2016 in the form of a black-and-white photograph of a young man — supposedly Soros — wearing an SS uniform, accompanied by this descriptive text:

.. I give you George Soros. A SS in the National Socialist German workers party. Nazi party. He served under Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. He said it was the best time of his life. The destruction and agony around him was euphoric to him. This man was making policy with Hillary Clinton. And some of you think Trump is dangerous. Wow!

Wow, indeed. As hoaxes go, this one was neither plausible nor hard to disprove. Given that Soros — bornin 1930 — was only nine years old when World War II began and 14 when the war ended in Europe in 1945, he couldn’t have joined the SS, whose minimum age requirement was 17, even if he had wanted to. Moreover, Soros would never have met the SS requirement for pure “Aryan” heritage. Quite to the contrary, Soros grew to adolescence as a persecuted Jew in Nazi-occupied Budapest.

The mislabeled photo is easily debunked using a reverse image search. The young man portrayed in the Waffen SS uniform is Oskar Groening, a Nazi who served at Auschwitz from 1942 through the end of World War II:
