Food industry braces for Obama trans fat ban

Right now the federal government has control over the products that can be purchased by federally issued food stamps. Since most of the food stamp recipients seem to suffer from obesity it might be an idea to try the trans fat experiment on them and restrict food stamp purchases to low trans fat products and see how it works out before the FDA wraps their tentacles around the private sector.
Why?

Why does the FDA need to wrap their tentacles on it at all regardless of what food stamp project might ensue.

LOl, you all should be so pleased you voted in these tryants who can wave a magic wand and BAN things in your life. Maybe we can get a petition going to BAN ABORTIONS.

snip:
The Obama administration is expected to all but ban trans fat in a final ruling that could drop as soon as next week, killing most uses of an ingredient that has been put in everything from frozen pizza to Reese’s Pieces but since deemed harmful to human health.

The agency may create some very limited exemptions, but the ruling could force food companies to cut trans fat use beyond the 85 percent reduction already achieved over the past decade — a key piece of the Obama administration’s broader agenda to nudge Americans toward a healthier diet. (Well hell, my mommy and daddy done both passed away. thank gawd for dear Leader)

The food industry believes low-levels of trans fats are safe. Industry leaders have banded together behind-the-scenes to craft a food additive petition that will ask FDA to allow some uses of partially hydrogenated oils, such as in the sprinkles on cupcakes, cookies and ice cream. The industry hasn’t shared details, but officials maintain the uses will represent “very limited amounts.”

For more than 60 years, partially hydrogenated oils have been used in food products under the status generally recognized as safe, which does not require FDA’s approval. But since the 1990s, reams of studies have linked trans fat consumption to cardiovascular disease, causing somewhere between 30,000 and 100,000 premature deaths before the industry started phasing it out.

In late 2013 the Obama administration issued a tentative determination that partially hydrogenated oils are not generally recognized as safe. The move sent shock waves through the food industry, which has already brought down average consumption from more than 4 grams per day to about 1 gram per day — an exodus largely fueled by mandatory labeling imposed a decade ago. Scores of popular products, including Oreos and Cheetos, have quietly dropped partially hydrogenated oils over the years, but it remains an ingredient in many products, including Pop Secret microwave popcorn, Pillsbury Grands! Cinnamon Rolls and Sara Lee cheesecake, as well as some restaurant fryers and commercial bakery goods.

If FDA sticks to its guns in its final determination — and most in food policy circles assume it will — the agency will be taking a firm step toward pushing out more of the remaining uses of trans fat.

If we reduce trans fats to the new level, it's estimated that it will reduce the number of heart attacks by 20,000 a year and will save 7,000 live. Trans fats are primarily used in bake goods and some fried foods.

Products with trans fats less the .5 grams per serving are recorded as 0 grams on the label. .4 grams can be quite a bit of trans fat and you have no way of knowing you're eating it. You can have several servings of food on your plate that are all listed as 0g of trans fat and together can make up a very unhealthy meal, and you have no way of knowing.

The major use of trans fats is in the baking industry, so when you get those cookies and bread at the bakery or in a restaurant, you never know how much trans fats you're eating unless the establishment states they use no trans fats.

Considering the wealth of research that concludes that trans fats are not healthy in any amount, banning them is a good idea. There are a number of substitutes available which will have little effect on price or shelf live. This is why many food processor have already stopped the use of trans fats.

Even if the government doesn't band the use, the bad press that many brands are receiving, with cause even more manufactures to abandon trans fat.

Uh --- because it's their JOB. Is this a trick question?

We've been eating transfats for decades. I havent seen anyone keel over because he ingested the stuff.

By that point they're generally in a hospital bed, which are notoriously difficult to keel.
rabbi is kinda slow.....he thinks this stuff kills you quick...
People certainly act like it.
Please show me the people who have died from eating transfats. There arent any. There are people who died because they were obese, people who died because they didnt take care of themselves, people who died because they didnt monitor their blood pressure--all kinds of reasons But eating transfats wasnt one of them. The proof: Plenty of people have eatne transfat containing foods for decades and are perfectly healthy.
What about that is tough to understand?
rabbi why dont you show us a medical study saying that trans-fats are not harmful to the human body.....because i can show you dozens saying that it is the worst fat to consume....it raises your LDL levels and lowers your HDL levels.....and in case you dont know, you dont have to be fat to have heart disease.....
Why dont you show a study that says hamburgers are not harmful? How about cheese? Heavy cream? There are none. eat any of those in enough quantities and they'll kill you. Transfats are no different.
Dont like them? Dont eat them.
Why arent you trying to ban bacon? Is there anyone who believes you can eat as much bacon as you want and not die?
is that you dean?.....

The entire idea of freedom is lost on people these days.

Are trans fats bad for you? Yes, we all know they are just like thousands of other things you consume or do on a daily basis. What makes this nation great is that you have the freedom to live, and eventually die, as you chose. Your life and you chose to live it.

It is fucking disgusting that so many damn busy bodies feel that they have to get involved to run our lives and force us into doing what they perceive as best. Why can you not mind your own damn business? The left claims to support freedom and then actively undermines it every chance they get - it is infuriating.
You can raise an animal and render it all you like, then consume the lard that is the product of the action..No one will care.......
Sorry, local ordinances don't allow me to do that either. Nice try though.

It is also an asinine response in general. Freedom is just that - mind your own damn business and stop trying to get in my way if I want a nice trans fat burger. It is MY choice what I consume - not yours or any other do gooder.
Move to the country.......
Or you could simply not purchase trans fats rather than force them out of the market because you don't like them.

You do understand the concept of freedom, do you not?
you do understand that not to long ago trans fats were added to a lot of foods for taste and preserving....before the 90's not much was known about how they affect your health....if they occur naturally thats one thing, but when they were added to so many different things that is another thing, lots of foods had them.....

Feel free to protest. In fact, make the reintroduction of trans fats a cornerstone of the GOP platform, along with rescinding mandatory seat belts in cars, speed limits, and health inspections for restaurants. While you're at it, why don't you champion the reintroduction of chlorofluorocarbons and DDT. And what's up with all those damn building codes to make buildings structurally sound with fire suppression systems? And if you want your kids to have toys with lead-based paint on them, that's YOUR business, right?

I know (R)ight! I remember when Mrs. Obama said we should drink more water and the Right Wing called her a Nazi CONTROL FREAK that didn't know science. Their message seemed to be "water is bad".

Not a smart message.

If you disapprove of trans fats, don't eat them. See how simple that is?

Nothing is funnier than watching people fight for profit over humanity. "But it's freedom to give America extremely terrible things they don't know about because they are busy working all day"

This discussion reminds me of Aspertame. It was banned twice by the FDA. But Big Corporations BOUGHT it's way back in.

Well, unlike some federally banned substances, trans-fats actually kill people.
We've been eating transfats for decades. I havent seen anyone keel over because he ingested the stuff.

You haven't known anyone who died of heat disease? Lucky you.
Not what I said, dufus.
Plenty of people have eaten transfats and they're fine. Monitor the intake and you'll be fine.It is typcal of dems that they want to demonize the object and excuse the user.
Plenty of people smoke cigarettes, drink a quart a liquor a day, and use drugs and they are still alive but that still doesn't make it safe.

How does one monitor the amount trans fats in their diet when process food labels say 0 grams when they actually contain up .5 grams? Actually any amount of trans fat is bad, worse than saturated fat. A trans-fat diet reduces blood vessel function by 30%, raises LDL ("bad")-cholesterol, and lowers HDL ("good")-cholesterol levels by about one fifth.

You need to recognize the Right doesn't want to hear all of this information. They just want "FREEDOM!"

The sad part is when Corporations deny them the freedom to know what is in the products they are consuming/using.

They KNOW they will get more wages once their boss gets more profits. I'll let the smart ones figure that one out lol.

Please offer proof that occasionally eating .5grams of transfats is injurious to health. We'll wait.

Eat enough of anything and you'll keel over from a heart attack or stroke. It isnt the food, it's the eater.
really?.....so if i eat broccoli every day ill get a heart attack because of it?....

When did it become the FEDERAL Governments job to BAN foods so they can push you towards a, HEALTHY diet?

Its not actually "freedom" the right wants. If that were true, they would be fighting for the rights of all American to marry whom they want, for women to have complete sovereign control over their own reproduction and they'd fight to keep religion separate from government.

Nor do they want a safe place to raise their kids or a first rate education for them. And they definitely don't care about other kids.

Rabid RWs seem to want to be on the wrong side of every single issue.

You lose this debate every time making stupid assertions you cannot back up.
Yes, conservatives object that there is no "freedom to murder" in the Constitution. They also oppose activiist gay judges shoving gay marriage down our throats after we voted it down. It seems the Left is the anti-freedom party, the party of limited sized soft drinks, gun control, and Common Core.
