Francis Keys bridge hit by ship. Bridge collapses, mass casualty event.

As pilots we're taught to line up on the runway well ahead of landing. Perhaps if the cargo ship had lined up on the center channel well ahead it might have coasted right through without hitting anything when it lost power. Just an afterthought.

That is why they have qualified Harbor pilots on these ships as they leave the harbor.
They know the obstacles, currents, weather patterns and anything else unique to that port.

Damn, this is worse than the Skyway. :(

As far as structural stuff.

As far as deaths, it's better.

all that works fine if you dont have a cross wind or current,,

Too long and too Woo for here .
Cut until Clif high speaks, and then you will get your answers and much , much more that you will not want .

An opening will doubtlessly be prepared rapidly, perhaps in a matter of weeks or even less. Clearing debris enough for ships to pass is not all that complicated.
Take into account the new traffic patterns, wait times, and additional factors and it isn't just about opening a shipping lane. Plus, when's the last time anyone ever did government work fast? The longer it takes, the longer the gravy train rolls on. It will take years, a dozen cost overruns, and the rest of the country will move on and forget about it.

That was their job. They were told to stop traffic, and that's what they tried to do. It's not like they made this call on gut instinct. Christ...
We know they did. We DON'T know that you would have.

And some people here are more concerned with their immigration status than the fact that they died trying to save others by warning them off the bridge or turning them around.
Yeah, not every one is a simple minded buffoon incapable of looking at more than one facet of any given event. This appears to be the very thing you open border hacks have been looking for. A company that hires illegal aliens. Predictably, you give them a pass. Hypocrite.

And what happens to a commercial aircraft that loses power during ascent?

Like the aircraft, once the ship lost power it was at the mercy of wind, current, and gravity...Natural forces.

Something went wrong and was most likely preventable

Was it poor maintenance by the ship’s crew?

Or incompetence by the pilot?
The ships traveling out of that harbor (and others) are required to have a local pilot guiding the ship out.
The ship lost power, the backup generator kicked in but the engines never restarted.
A ship the size of the Chrysler building in NYC traveling at 8 knots. You don't just throw the parking brake or drop an anchor and have it stop on a dime.
It would take over a mile to actually stop the ship.

It's a miracle they closed that bridge within 90 seconds. If that had happened at rush hour during the day, the death toll would have been unbelievable.

From what I understand there was a 4 to 6 knot wind during more or less slack tide. Plenty enough wind for a sail effect under a power loss.

That's what happened with the cargo ship that blocked the Suez Canal for so long.
The wind in the Suez Canal incident was said to blow at 46 mph.

I think the steering was hacked and intentionally set on a collision course
The steering cannot be hacked, you moron! It is an analog system using synchros, if it is a standard system. Turn the ships wheel and the rudder moves. If they lost power, the rudder would stay it it's last position. You can manually move the rudder back to centerline, but it takes a while to do it by hand.
