Funeral home refuses to cremate 82 year old man after his death

I believe business should NOT be forced to perform an activity outside of what it normally does. I also believe that if a business refuses to perform its normal activity simply because of who the customer is then it is discrimination unless there is a darn good reason (such as customer's health and/or age). I wouldn't list sexual preference as a darn good reason not to perform a cremation.
-------------------------------------------------- Private business and people should be able to discriminate as much as it or they like 2CENTS ..

Used to be nutters could get away with that but society has evolved beyond such brainless hate.

Well, most of society has anyway.

And the vile few who are set on holding on to their evil ignorance don't have a choice.

It makes one wonder what their reaction would have been if they were approached by the family of a gay soldier killed in action.

. . . because the owners found out on the day he dies that the 82 year old man was gay.

Homophobic hatred is not the standard for American values of decency and right action.

What is the fuck wrong with people like this? The great majority of us who are hetero do not understand the stupid hatred and meanness.

Gay man sues funeral home that refused his 86-year-old husband's body

One Mississippi family's pain and grief after losing a loved one was compounded when the local funeral home suddenly refused to perform their relative's cremation because he was gay.

Robert Huskey passed away in May 2016 after his heart condition worsened over the previous year. Knowing that his death was imminent, Huskey's nephew had made arrangements with the local funeral home the month before his passing.

Federal legislation introduced Tuesday would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which currently bans discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion or national origin. At an introduction ceremony for the Equality Act, Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin said passage of the bill will end the "patchwork" of nondiscrimination protections currently offered by only some cities and states.

"No person's fundamental civil rights should be determined by which side of a state line they live on," Griffin said. "But at this very moment, half of LGBT Americans live in a state where they are at risk of being fired, denied housing or refused service simply because of who they are. That's un-American."

Rob Hill, director of the Human Rights Campaign's Mississippi chapter, told NBC News that his office is "deeply disappointed" by the funeral home's actions.

"All Mississippians — regardless of who they are or whom they love — deserve to be treated with respect," Hill said. "We will continue to push for expanded, statewide protections for LGBTQ Mississippians so that this type of unconscionable discrimination will be prevented in the future."

Editor's Note: This article's headline mistakenly stated John Huskey was 82 when he died. He was in fact 86

I seriously just can't wrap my head around the fact that this person's family wants to force his dead body upon people who don't want to handle it.

They are the reason the mortician wants to dump the dude on someone else. What scumbags. Using a dead loved one to push a point and abuse someone.

homosexual soldier mentioned in post #86 . Why would that make any difference NOT ??

while i may not agree with the crematorium i see no problem , take the dead guy elsewhere Sur !!

They had already paid for this funeral home. The death was not unexpected and they had made arrangements for the cremation in advance.

The mortician learned the guy was gay after he was dead and only then refused service.

I'd sue his ass six ways to Sunday.

Fake news to generate false outrage, the lawsuit was filed because the family violated the partners wishes, but wants to blame the funeral home!

Who gives a fucking shit....

Right to refuse service everybody?

Yeah, that is not actually a "right".

The Right to Refuse Service: Can a Business Refuse Service to Someone?

Refuse to serve a Jewish person and let me know how that goes...

Esthermoon from 'viet nam' has no idea what a FREE Country is or has ever been in the past do you Esthermoon ??

In your "free country" could a funeral home refuse to bury or cremate a black person? Can we have "whites only" funeral parlors in your "free" America?
---------------------------------------------------------- that should be allowable Seawitch .

-------------------------------------- and the money should be refunded but the mortician should be able to enforce his rules in his private business DLady .
