TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Protesters who set up camp in the state Capitol building earlier this week finally got to meet with Gov. Rick Scott late Thursday, and they urged him to push for the repeal of Florida's "stand-your-ground" law and to take steps to combat racial profiling.

In a conference room near his office suite, Scott met for nearly an hour with seven leaders of the protest, which began Tuesday. .....

Saying the 17-year-old's death happened on Scott's watch, the protesters renewed their request that the Republican governor call state legislators into special session to repeal the law which justifies the use of deadly force when a person's life is in danger.

"There has to be a comprehensive approach to make sure every child in Florida can feel safe again," Gabriel Pendas told the governor.

Scott listened intently and took copious notes on a yellow legal pad.

But at the end of the meeting he told them directly that he supported keeping the "stand-your-ground" law intact and he would not call a special session.

The Tampa Bay Times used media reports, court records and interviews with prosecutors and attorneys to identify more than 200 “stand your ground” cases across Florida. The list, though incomplete, is the most comprehensive in the state and likely includes most fatal cases.

Excuse me, but you're bringing up race, not me. Do you see the words "Black" or "Negro" anywhere in my post?

Your rant is extremely revealing about you, not my post.

In fact, I'd say you are race-baiting.

And FYI. You're the one being played, sucker. SYG laws were shoved through the legislature in Florida by the NRA. Specifically, Marion Hammer.

Stand your ground is sound in concept; people have a right to defend themselves outside the home very bit as mich as they do inside.

No amout of liberal whining about a kid who died because of his own actions will change that.

Stand your ground is insane and harkens back to the days of "Frontier Justice".

Even John Wayne movies didn't back up "Stand your ground".

Check em out. When entering a town, you had to give your shootin' iron to the big man.

Think so?
Present an argument to that effect that does not stand on emotion, ignorance and/or dishionesty.
Of course, we both know you cannot do this, so you will not even try.

The lives of children, (used in a VERY broad sense) when they put the lives of others in danger has to be protected.

We can't have people running around thinking they have the right to put an end to a violent black person attacking them. Especially if the victim is white.

"....a kid"? Better check on the latest one, bub. Her name is Marissa Alexander and she's serving a 20 year term for protecting herself against an estranged husband who had battered her on prior occasions.

Lesson No. 1: Florida is one fucked up state because it is run by rednecks who are sock-puppets for the NRA.

You should check the case out. Of course that assumes you know something about self defense law, which you clearly don't.

Kudos to Scott on this one. Stand your ground is a fine law. Of course it had nothng to do with Zimmerman but what the hey. It is on the lib agenda for repeal.

She's serving a 20 year sentence because she shot a gun randomly without regard as to the danger shooting that gun posed to others. She could not be said to take advantage of stand your ground laws, because she left the scene, got her gun, then returned as the aggressor.

You are not entitled to your own facts.

Facts and sublety are lost on the brain dead libs.
Yes, she was clearly not in fear of death or severe bodily harm, unlike Zimmerman.

And when you went into a bar/saloon, too. In Texas you can carry a gun into the capitol gallery in Austin. Tsk.

Gun laws were tougher in old Tombstone
No need to check your firearm today in the Arizona town famed for the gunfight at the OK Corral.
"You could wear your gun into town, but you had to check it at the sheriff's office or the Grand Hotel, and you couldn't pick it up again until you were leaving town," said Bob Boze Bell, executive editor of True West Magazine, which celebrates the Old West. "It was an effort to control the violence."

You can carry gun into a bar in TN too.

That is a lie, she is serving 20 years because she retreated and returned with a gun, she was offered 3 years in a plea bargain and refused it. Lying to attempt to bolster your case does just the opposite, just shows your ignorance.

Yes, she was clearly not in fear of death or severe bodily harm, unlike Zimmerman.

Fact: You act as though you were there with Zimmerman, and you were not a witness.
Fact: The only witness is dead.
Fact: The decision by the jury had to be made because of Florida's gun laws, not because Zimmerman proved his innocence.
Fact: Zimmerman did not take the stand. What was he hiding?

Secondly,
Fact: Alexander had a restraining order filed and standing with the court, meaning the judge GRANTED it to her because
Fact: she PROVED her husband had battered her on two previous occasions.

So what would you two knuckleheads have her do? Wait to get beat up a 3rd time?

Even if the Stand your ground laws didn't exist in Florida, George Zimmerman would not have been found guilty of killing Trayvon Martin. Why? Because he didn't use stand your ground as a defense. He used self defense.

The Original poster has demonstrated that she has no clue what stand your ground means. And anyone asking the Governor to rescind all self defense laws isn't talking about stand your ground and I sincerely pray neither gets into a situation where they have to defend themselves after trying to hard to eliminate this natural right.

You ignoramuses are going to do what you always do, read the headlines and decide.
It's why the GOP is imploding.
