Civics Lesson: The U.S. Constitution defines a Federal government of LIMITED powers. The states have PLENARY powers. The powers of Congress are listed in Article I, Section 8. The 10th Amendment decrees that all powers not specifically granted (in the Constitution) to the Federal government are reserved to the states and to the people.

Hence, "EDUCATION" is a subject where the Federal Government has no constitutional power or role.

But as we all know, there is ZERO chance of eliminating a Federal Department once it is created.

The best we can hope for, as Conservatives, is that some Secretary of Education and Congress (maybe this one) will scale back the role of the DoE to something close to the role that the FBI plays in local law enforcement. It can be a clearing house for information, a funder of new technologies, a lab for innovative ideas, and can help with standardization where it is appropriate. But dictating policies and mandating programs, initiatives, and testing...NO. Passing out federal taxpayers' money to promote "equality", definitely not. Defining which bathrooms a kid can use....gimme fucking break!

Congress can defund anything it wants that is not an entitlement. It doesn't take 60 votes, it takes 51. Therefore, if the republicans wish to defund virtually any agency, they can without a single democratic vote.

Will they do it? Doubt it seriously, but bet they use the threat to get more of what they want.

Was that part of the idea--to make sure each state had funds to run federal programs like no child left behind and the disability accessibility regulations and Special Education, etc. Would it become the choice of each state which special ed programs to fund? A good thing would be one less level of standardized testing for the students.
