Pretty soon they'll be asking Dan Quayle to give it another shot, anything to stop Trump.

Republicans in tailspin, group forms to draft Ryan for U.S. president

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With U.S. Republicans sharply split over a front-runner they cannot unite behind, a new group is trying to push the country's top elected Republican, Paul Ryan, into the White House race.

The Committee to Draft Speaker Ryan filed papers as a Super PAC with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, adding to the groups of mainstream Republican leaders and donors with a shared goal: stopping Trump.

Ryan, the House of Representatives speaker who spoke out against Trump for not quickly rejecting white supremacist support, did not appear ready to take on the role.

"He is flattered, but not interested," Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said in an email on Friday.

Politico first reported the formation of the draft-Ryan PAC.

Mitt Romney, the Republicans' losing presidential candidate in 2012, also said he was not interested.

"There are no circumstances I can foresee where that would possibly happen," Romney said on NBC's "Today" show on Friday, a day after he excoriated Trump as a fraud ill-equipped for the White House.

The Republican Party may need more than a hero as it grapples with its deepest divisions in decades.

Those splits were on display again on Thursday night as Trump took on his two closest challengers, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz of Texas, in a debate marked by the yelling, name-calling and vulgarity that has tainted the 2016 Republican race.

Trump's rivals said they would support the ultimate nominee but it was clear on Friday that would be easier said than done.

"That is the quandary I'm trying to avoid the Republican Party having to face," Rubio said on CNN on Friday.

While the anti-Trump movements proliferated, some Republicans have urged party leaders to respect the will of the voters.

Trump spokesman Sam Clovis seized on that message on Friday, warning on CNN that it was dangerous for Republican leaders to "call American voters stupid" because they support Trump.

"You have record turnout in every state so far. Record turnout. That doesn't happen by accident, said Clovis, national campaign co-chairman.

Trump is "tapping into what is going on in this country like no one else has in a long, long time. I haven't seen anything like this since Ronald Reagan."

I think the voters should decide, but winner-take-all allocations of delegates should not occur unless the winning candidate receives a majority (51%) of the votes.

Ryan couldn't even beat Biden in a debate. And THAT is saying ALOT

I like Ryan most of any of the gopers, but he doesn't want the job unless compromise is seen as a tool of leadership.
I used to think he was ok until I started paying more attention. Him hiring a chamber of commerce lobbyist as his chief of staff was the final nail in the coffin

I think the voters should decide, but winner-take-all allocations of delegates should not occur unless the winning candidate receives a majority (51%) of the votes.

Winner take all is intended to make sure someone does get more than 50%. At that point, none of the rest matters.

I am pretty confidant that IF it goes to a brokered convention, and IF Rubio loses Florida, you will have Romney as the nominee, and Trump will be offered the VP slot, which he will refuse. In this manner, the GOP will give themselves some cover with Trump for offering VP, and the establishment will get what they want.

How do I draw this conclusion?

Name me one prominent Republican who the GOP could elevate with enough name recognition to have any sort of chance that is establishment, if Rubio loses Florida?

If Trump goes 3rd party, they have an excuse for losing. If not, they have put all their eggs in the one basket, because if/when Romney loses, the GOP is no more.

In this scenario, Trump helps the GOP by going 3rd party, because they have a built in excuse for the Democrat getting elected.

This is why supporters of Trump/Cruz have to put their thinking caps on for once! They MUST push one of these 2 into the nomination outright. You MUST understand that one set of you is going to take 1/2 a loaf, or run the risk of everyone getting nothing at all, while ALL of you get laughed at, and the blame for the loss to Hillary. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, DON'T DO IT! This is the best chance you will have had since Reagan to reshape the party. Sure, your two candidates aren't exactly on the same page, but one it starts changing, you will help the change as you exert more authority.

To not accept this is to allow the GOP to stay exactly where it is, with NO hope of you exerting change at all on them, or Washington DC. That is NOT the smart thing to do, if you want to save your country from the left, wing, loons!

I would also like to ask all you GOPers for Trump/Cruz, this simple question------------>

Who/whom is going to be MORE amicable to your wishes? Mr Trump? Mr. Cruz? Or would you rather deal with Mz. Clinton! If you don't get that, then I suppose you really don't get it.

You know...if Kasich wins Ohio, the other Rust Belt states and the West, including California, they'll have to change their motto to "Anyone But Kasich". You know, because he's experienced, would draw in middle votes, is sane and mature enough to run the country wearing the GOP label. What a tragedy. Plus he's polling as the best bet to defeat Hillary...what's not to hate?

Paul Ryan as probably the next most powerful man in Washington is best serving his country doing exactly what he's doing right now.
