Here come the salt police!!!!

It is simply insane to me that the conservatives on this board want to spite the government soooo much that even food protections are characterized as big-government socialist agendas.

Why even care about food quality at all if that's your stance. Screw all the crap that big business could leave/put in your meat. They've got such a track record of quality *roll eyes*

Can't you people see that you're going too far in your hatred of all things Obama?

I think we should be more concerned with the fact that there are only 4 meat processing plants left in the US, and what they think they must do to churn out all the food consumed in the US

I keep meaning to pick up some of Michael Pollan's books on the subject.

I get that the government can go too far. I get that food regulation can go too far. But for ffs, I havent seen ONE POST here that shows the specific legislation on salt is a) overstepping its authority or b) wrong on the merits of the science.

it's all just the usual platitudes about big government...nothing specific to this actual regulation.

Your right, the FDA has been such a success over the last 20 years. :cuckoo:

Yeah, in September they mandated that tobacco companies infuse their cigarette tubes with the substance know as EVA, AKA carpet glue. :clap2: for the FDA

I'm sure you would be Okay with the government telling you how to cook your food, too. You sound more like a sheep than a thinking person

Come on Meister, I thought you were above strawmen. ;)

Has the FDA done stupid stuff? Sure. Under both conservative and liberal presidents alike.

But has it protected people? It sure as fucking has:

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938 was passed after a legally marketed toxic elixir killed 107 people, including many children. The FD&C Act completely overhauled the public health system. Among other provisions, the law authorized the FDA to demand evidence of safety for new drugs, issue standards for food, and conduct factory inspections.

The Kefauver-Harris Amendments of 1962, which were inspired by the thalidomide tragedy in Europe (and the FDA's vigilance that prevented the drug's marketing in the United States), strengthened the rules for drug safety and required manufacturers to prove their drugs' effectiveness.

The Medical Device Amendments of 1976 followed a U.S. Senate finding that faulty medical devices had caused 10,000 injuries, including 731 deaths. The law applied safety and effectiveness safeguards to new devices.
Legislation

I'm not sheep. Not in the least. If I was, I'd have picked one of the two ranting sides here on USMB and went partisan hack on someone's ass. As it stands, I rep people on both sides and work to support common sense...not partisan ideology.

And I'm still not hearing any sort of legal argument about the illegality of what the FDA is doing. More anecdotes and platitudes. Prove yourselves, people.

I don't think anyone, the odd wingtard notwithstanding, is arguing that this is illegal. It's more just expressing the opinion that this is unnecessary. And since I cannot "prove" my opinion, you'll just have to take my word for it that I feel that way.

I'm not argueing republicans or democrats with the FDA. I'm arguing the government and the FDA. The FDA has been wrong a lot through the years......and it's still not fixed. That's the government, seems to think it just needs to be close, and not precise, I disagree.
If your willing to let the government start mandating your right to the "seasoning" of foods, then you would be in the tank with anything they lay on the table (pun intended) for you.
I would think they would have much bigger fish to fry (pun intended) than taking up a salt issue.

You're equivocating with the word salt. You're making salt out to be just some simple seasoning that cant harm people. Clearly it can.

Just because you have warm, fuzzy feelings (read as: it has legitimate, non-dangerous uses) about salt doesnt mean it can't be just as harmful as stuff you'd instantly accept as poison.

If it wasn't harmful at all, I wouldnt be posting responses to you. Your time on USMB might have you assuming that a bunch of people want to become government slaves, but I'm not one of them. You can reject that notion if you want - but it's going to make our discussion devolve rather quickly.

Personal responsibility and independent decision-making are HUGELY HUGELY important concepts and I'll defend them as well. But I have yet to hear a legal argument about why FDA is not within its authority to mandate levels.

The constitutionality of what they're doing has been called into question all over the USMB including in this thread.

It's cool that you have an opinion...I'm not trying to stifle that...but if we're talking constitutionality...anecdotes and personal preferences dont really address that issue.

just the beginning of what is going to happen wih Obamacare there is going to be meat police candy police ect. we are going to get taxed on everything that the Government deems bad for us.
WELCOME TO THE GRANNY STATE
IS THIS THE CHANGE YOU VOTED FOR?

You were all warned about this man but you drank the purple kool-aid and fell for his lies hook line and sinker!!!!

So it comes down to goverment legalities with you. Well look at it this way, first it's salt, then it's sugars, then it's BBQing. Now lets get with the mercury in the fish....can't eat fish any longer. See where this is going? To think, it just started with that little salt thingy. no big deal huh?

yes, but even those constitutionality arguments are purely academic, which I suspect is understood by those making them (or at least I hope). I could be wrong, but even RetardedGaySarge must know that his argument is based on his academic opinion about how the Constitution should be interpretted, and not how it actually has been interpretted.

So why come on here and rail on something being ZOMG!! uNconStItUtionAL!!

If people are going to do that...then when I ask to discuss that topic with *gasp* constitutional arguments...people say "look it really doesnt matter - these are just opinions" - why do it?

It's fine to post opinions on here - that's all this place is. But daily I see posts on here about how shit is unconstitutional - citing almost nothing in support of it - and I was hoping to actually follow a train of thought to its conclusion.

Well now you're just being disingenuous since we both know that there is nothing even remotely unconstitutional about this. ;)

Why didn't you post a thread in the "Law and Justice System" forum if you wanted to rail the legalities of this issue. This forum is for thought and opinions. Sorry I won't play this game with you.
I still say you are a sheep if you let this government intrude into your daily life as to the use of salt. How's that for an opinion?
