High Cost of Climate Change

Star and the Old rockinhead, the chicken little's of GloBULL warming

what a life to sit around and put down your own country

No, it is stupid assholes like you that put down this nation. Assholes that denigrate education and science. Assholes that think that social safety nets are sinful, and would happily see children in this nation in need of food and medical care while the upper 1% are making billions off the backs of the working people of this nation.

Now at no time have I connected the slide at Oso with global warming. There is enough annual rainfall there to make that slide inevitable. What I have stated is that we know enough about the physics of landslides that we predicted that slide, and with instrumentation, could have given warning that the hill was starting to move.

But that does cost money. So the question is, how much money are the lives of the people below such areas worth to the community and state? For people like you, Staph, the answer is obvious. You think that 63 cents per taxpayer is too much to pay to insure that children have food to eat.

The geologists who stated that there would be a catastrophic slide in that area in 1999 were more than likely damned by the 'Conservatives' as stupid 'alarmists'.
"More than likely"? Either they did or they didn't call them alarmists? Conservatives tend to err on the side of caution so I'll call your bluff.

I won't live on a cliff or the bottom of a hill or next to a river, etc. It isn't politics but common sense to me. You can drive all around here and see row after row of new developments perched on hills and slopes. More of this will happen, Mother Nature doesn't care where you build but don't
Timothy Egan writes that the hillsides became dangerous because they were overlogged. He had visited the area 25 years ago and watched a massive mudslide then. He adds,
Yes, but who wants to listen to warnings by pesky scientists, to pay heed to predictions by environmental nags, or allow an intrusive government to limit private property rights?[/B] That’s how these issues get cast. And that’s why reports like the ones done on the Stillaguamish get shelved. The people living near Oso say nobody ever informed them of the past predictions.
What a steamy pile. Government is supposed to serve at least primary functions, infrastructure and safety are one of the basics and the reason we have government. The fact that they couldn't put two and two together, didn't care to or were payed to look the other way isn't the fault of anyone except those involved in the process. Shame on you for trotting out liberal talking points and casting blame onto others.

If it was overlogged (which I'm not necessarily onboard with since it was a mass of trees that came down) then it's the fault of the government in charge of regulating the logging. Not somebody else.

Wow, and you call someone else an asshole?

she doesn't feed her kids? Oh, you mean everyone else's. I believe parents should feed their own children and taxing them more is the wrong solution. Even if it pisses an old retread socialist off.

What should have happened is the government payed geologists should have nixed any building there and the government shouldn't have permitted it. Then old retread socialists wouldn't have to think that the solution was even more money spent as a last ditch effort to minimize the catastrophe and they'd be able to save the energy for other meaningless rants.

lol, old rockinthehead blew a gasket

wasn't pretty either...

blah blah blah blah vomit all over us

I'd estimate that the POLAR VORTEX (whatever the cause) cost me at least $500 more in heating my home than normal.

Throw in the additional $200 or so for extra snow removal.

Here's the thing about GLOBAL WEIRDING..its gonna get very expensive for ALL of us sooner or later.

In most cases it ALREADY IS.

ok and just what the hell are we suppose to do about it to stop that?

we can all move back into cave, ride camels, burn camel dung for fuel, eat grass, etc

The scientists have been telling you for decades what we need to do about it. People like you have called them liars, commies, and even tried to prosecute them for publishing their findings.

The "scientist" have been trying to tell us what to do...what is that? throw BILLIONS of dollars at them and they will wave their fairy dust and walla, the climate will stop changing....

now scientist are our g-ds beside Politicians? I can't keep it straight

So, your solution to a normal climatic cycle is to DOUBLE, or TRIPLE your energy costs? All for something which they can't show is happening, and their solutions will have even the slightest effect. They have had to admit that their GCM's are worthless. Actually they're worse than useless, and yet that's your solution?

Color me confused. You complain about the costs and then declare you want to increase them:cuckoo:

And just so you know...Global Weirding is a phrase right out of Art Bell. The doyen of conspiracy nuts everywhere.

Yes, anyone who advocates the expenditure of 76 trillion dollars for a "maybe" is batshit crazy. That money can be far better used to combat REAL pollution.

Stephanie, have you ever made an attempt to accurately and objectively describe your surroundings and what you believe is happening there? Scientists aren't ordering you about. Scientists, since long before you were born, have attempted to spread the knowledge that they uncover in an attempt to HELP YOU. Do you object to the medical researchers that have developed thousands of life saving medications and treatments and made huge advances in our knowledge of how the human body works? How about the scientists that told you to eat well and get exercise? How about the scientists that encouraged you to quit smoking? How about that scientists who told you to wear your seat belt and slow down when it rains? How about the scientists that figured out how to safely shelter yourself and your loved ones from tornadoes and lightning storms? How about the scientists that tell you how to prevent fires in your home? How about the scientists that tell you how to safely select, prepare and store your food?

Are you sick of all of them telling you what to do?

How about the scientists who are bent on destroying world economies, our way of life, and employment opportunity for billions of C02-exhaling humans?

1) You haven't (nor has Stephanie) answered my question
2) You've entirely missed the point I was attempting to make
3) There is no evidence that such scientists exist.

What is wrong with you? Do you think you have to be Hitler to get a PhD?

Most of what you listed is just common sense. We didn't need a scientist to tell us to get out of the rain. People have known that for at least 200,000 years.

The fact that scientist may have been right about something in the past doesn't prove they are always right. The history of science is full of quacks and frauds, especially when it comes to government science. So-called "scientists" told us for years that steroids didn't make you gain muscle. Then it turns out they were all lying because the DEA threatened to revoke their licenses if they told the truth. Then there's the colossal fraud of Lysenko in the Soviet Union. There have also been numerous health scares like the one over Alar and red dye #2.

Science is not infallible. All you've done here is claim that it is.

Did I suggest you or I could stop it? No I did not.

Now what the fuck does that have to do with anything I'd written above?

Seriously, Steph, grow the fuck up.

So posts the bone headed ignoramous on an instrument and a system totally created by scientists. Your silly ass would not last a month without the scientists.

The current denigration of science and scientists by our 'Conservatives' is ample demonstration of the lack of intellect on their part.

Ummmmmm, the PC was invented by two guys who very much WEREN'T scientists. That point aside, scientists are people, some good, some bad. That's why the scientific method was developed, to protect science from SCIENTISTS!

BTW, the PC was created by Steve Wozniak in a garage. Wozniak was a college dropout.

Climate change and the Oso WA mudslide, extreme weather makes deadly results - National Environment | Examiner.com

David Herron
March 24, 2014

<snip>

In May 2011 the Union of Concerned Scientists issued a press release discussing how climate change contributes to heavy rainfall. The mudslide in Oso, WA, was clearly caused by heavy rainfall. According to UCSUSA, carbon emissions in the atmosphere traps heat, and the rising heat causes more water evaporation from oceans, land and plants. As the atmosphere warms it can hold more moisture, meaning that when rainfall does occur "there is more water vapor available in the atmosphere to fall as rain, snow or hail."

As a result, U.S. Global Change Research Program’s (USGCRP) scientists have observed "less rain falling in light precipitation events and more rain falling in the heaviest precipitation events across the United States." Or, put another way, when it rains it pours. Heavily.
The UCSUSA press release closed discussing the economic cost of flooding, and the Oso, WA, landslide demonstrates the high cost of climate change. To mitigate landslide risk governments work to shore up hillsides, like the WSDOT project just completed. Governments would also be tempted to build more storm drains, levees, dams and the like. Then there is the direct economic cost, destroyed homes or cities, highways wiped out, and lives lost or disrupted.

It's true, there were no landslides before the climate started to change.
