Lets clarify the meaning of the word "subsidy"

a subsidy is a direct payment to a person, corporation, or industry in exchange for doing or not doing something. Farmers get subsidies to let their fields sit idle to keep commodity prices stable, the oil companies do not get subsidies.

Tax credits for exploration and development expenses are not subsidies. Oil companies are allowed to write off these expenses as an incentive to find new sources of energy----congress actually thought at one time that incentivizing energy development was a good thing.

Considering our economy is based mostly on petroleum, they are protecting our interests as well. and the profit margins of oil companies are comparable to other industries, they just do more volume in sales, and thus make more money overall, not as a percentage.

Oil companies have made more money then all other industries combined in the whole history of capitalism.
