How do you expand the middle class

It's relevant. There are loads of unneeded jobs created by the bloated defense and homeland security depts. We should slash them to the bone, and use that money on health care in the cites, and better schools for blacks and hispanics.

Didnt know we still had segregated schools asshat.....earth to fool the year is 2013 not 1930.

We do have segregated schools. Not by law, fortunately, but sadly by the racism of whites whose racist "white flight" attitude has caused so much environmental and societal damage.

White flight was caused by high taxes when will you ever learn? The only racism exsists in the inner cities it dont happen in the burbs or in the south much anymore.

1. Raise minimum wages to what it would be if indexed to inflation. Then make future min income increases automatic to inflation, in order to take the power away from any greed-based GOP dominated government to undo it or stop it.

2. Limit imports, weaken "free trade" agreements, use anti-dumping laws as an end-around on the trade agreements that sadly do exist. If it's worth selling here, it's worth making here, end of debate.

3. Increase union power. Mandate union membership for all companies with 50 employees or above.

4. Increase income taxes. We need more rates and higher rates, up to 50% of income on anything over 3 million/year. And scrap the needless "capital gains" rate too. The people who "earn" capital gains spend it the same way they spend income, so it should be taxed the same way too. The new government revenue from this positive change should be spent on shoring up social spending programs, especially in poor, black neighborhoods. This will also help bring down the crime rates that white conservatives are supposedly so worried about.

mandate union membership? FYI RTW is up to 24 states now the trend will not reverse. what do you want all the manufacturing jobs to leave the States?

Those are excellent ways NOT to grow the middle class.

First exhibit: Detroit. That city had the highest per capita income i America in 1960. But Coleman Young pursued exactly policies like that and now the city is a stinkhole.

ya know its werid people want to expand the middle class yet give amnesty to millions of illegals. How is that supposed to lower the UE and raise wages? The only way to raise wages on the middle class is a low UE like the Dakotas. Kids are making 6 figures up there with no frickin Unions.

To expand the middle class, we have to support middle class values such as responsibility, frugality, strong work ethic, etc.

Holy crap, I'm surprised you haven't been called "mean" or "greedy" or (somehow) "racist" yet.

Those values are no longer promoted in this country (we now give students medals just for showing up), knock it off.

If we had Korean or Japanese laws on imports, then manufacturers wouldn't be allowed to leave. Again, if it's worth selling here, then it should be made here. You're welcome.

Wrong Wrong Wrong.

Giving people things doesn't make them middle class; behavior and attitudes do.

Evidence: all of those people who bought houses with Liar Loans in middle class neighborhoods and then defaulted on their loans. They had the middle class house, but didn't make the mortgage payments. For many, this was because having a house didn't suddenly make them adopt middle class values.

Likewise, protecting people from competition won't suddenly make them able to compete.

I'm waiting for the "just SHUT UP" counterpoint (one really can't call it an argument).

What about all the other large, American cities that are dominated by liberals and Democrats?

Why is every egg-shaped loser conservative suddenly screaming "Detroit" as if it's convincing? It convinces me that the US needs to tighten up the import laws, and crack down on non-union workplaces.

I bet the vast majority of conservatives on this board are far more attractive than you, velveetachump.

Your evidence is proof that the GOP dominated Bush Era was filled with economic gaffes and mistakes that finally caused the Bush Recession. It's the fault of conservatism. And the voters agreed. It's your fault.

Only a thorough moron such as yourself would draw such a conclusion.

Riddle me this: does giving a medical school diploma to an illiterate person turn that person into a surgeon?

this is the Socialist kind of thinking that is running and ruining our country....

dictating wages only skews and creates a false market....this leads to all kinds of economic fallout...

it's worth selling here if the product and the price is right...whether or not it was made here or not...

look what increased union power did to Detroit.....nuff said...

tax, tax, tax......that's really the bottomline only answer you socialists can come up with...talk about stupid...:cuckoo:
