A typical day in the life of an American city: Thirty one shootings, 9 dead - Chicago, September 5/6 2016
Wednesday 7th September, 2016 - A typical day in the life of an American city. Thirty-one shootings, nine fatalities. Welcome to Chicago.
It is not on the news because it is a regular occurrence throughout the United States where more than 30,000 people are killed each year from gunfire. Tens of thousands more are wounded. So from Monday until Tuesday over a 21 hour period, 31 people in Chicago are gunned down and nine are killed in separate shootings. We zoom into the city at 6:20am Monday as two people were having an argument on East 77th Street in the city's South Shore neighborhood. One of the two produces a gun and shoots the other, a man, 80 in the face. The assailant then gets closer to his victim and continues to shoot him, according to Chicago Police spokesperson Officer Michelle Tannehill. The Cook County medical examiner's office said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene Tennehill said a suspect is now in custody and will be charged.

Around 9:30am Monday two young men were shot in South Emerald Avenue in the Englewood neighborhood, according to Chicago Police Officer Jose Estrada. David Baldwin, 24, was shot in the head and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn while the other man, 26, whose name has not been released, was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the shoulder, Estrada said. A SWAT team was on site shortly after the shooting as the gunman had fled and was seen taking refuge in a nearby building. He escaped. Baldwin, meantime, died of his wounds early Monday afternoon.

Then at 10am Monday a man, 30, was critically wounded in a shooting in the Austin neighborhood. A dark van with two people reportedly pulled up, and an assailant got out of the van and began shooting at the man, who escaped to Central Avenue, where he got assistance. Then in the afternoon a 22-year old man was shot dead around 1:25pm Monday on South Whipple Street in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Enrique D. Morales, 22, with had been shot in the chest, according to Tannehill. Then around 3:20pm Monday two people were shot on West 53rd Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The pair were standing on a sidewalk when they were confronted by an assailant who walked up to the two and opened fire, explained Chicago Police spokesman Kevin Quaid. Both victims are in critical condition at Stroger hospital. One, a 27-year-old man was shot in the back, while the other a woman, 23, suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach.

At about 4:00pm Monday, again in the Back of the Yards neighborhood a 44-year old man driving on South Hermitage Avenue was harassed by a number of people in a white van. The man tried to drive off but one of the occupant's in the van opened fire on him, shooting him in the head, neck and back, according to Tannehill. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, but was pronounced dead soon after. Two men are now in custody after a van matching the description of the one involved in the shooting crashed on Western Avenue. Police say they have recovered a rifle from the van. A little over half an hour later, at 4:35pm Monday, a 19-year-old youth was shot in South Eberhart Street in the Park Manor neighborhood. He was admitted to Stroger Hospital and is expected to fully recover from his wounds. He was shot in the leg by an assailant in a dark sedan.
