How Much Freedom Are You Willing To Give Up To Fight Terrorism?

Our country lost its collective mind after 9/11 and jumped on board the Patriot Act train. Torture; imprisoning US citizens without habeas corpus; flag pin blacklists; wiretapping US citizens by the millions; three wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Terror), including the pre-emptive invasion of another country; the creation of a massive new Cabinet level police agency; the militarization of state, county, and local police; and so forth.

I have said a few times that in the basement of the US Capitol there is a shrink-wrapped Patriot Act II: This Time We REALLY Mean Business.™

Meter maids will be shooting double-parkers. The FBI will be doing "drop-ins" to ask why there has been a sudden spike in the amount of milk you put in your cereal. Armbands will be the new black. Sean Hannity will be denying bamboo shoots under your fingernails is torture.

Someone has put the idea in a lot of pointy heads that there would be no casualties of the good guys during the War on Terror™. But it has been an inevitable fact there would be, and will be more.

So when our turn comes around again, how much more of your freedoms will you be willing to give up?

Hint: If you go along with the forthcoming argument after the next attack that Muslims are not protected by the First Amendment, that counts as giving up some of your rights.

I think after the next attack we will see more domestic warrantless internet/cell phone surveillance. And it will take some form that identifies communication to and from the same site with regularity, even if you are communicating with your sister in Peoria, or a biz associate in Washington DC. In short, they'll read our mail

My personal view is that I'm ok with that IF there are various safeguards that make it illegal to use info to prosecute or even target for further spying WITH a warrant for any non-terror crime, like child porn or drugs. And, allowing a private citizen to file a complaint in court, and if a govt official violated the law, he goes to the pokey and is financially destroyed.

The government is already doing all that. They started before the ink on the Patriot Act was dry.

The Patriot Act was actually the culmination of a long wish list law enforcement had had for a long time. And not just for use against terrorists, but for use against all kinds of domestic criminal activities.

It was extremely naive to believe the Patriot Act would only be used against terrorists.

I'm willing to sacrifice Obama and all his followers to ISIS.

The way most all media outlets a shilling fear, a new patriot act is in the works just waiting for the day.

First up, foreign immigrants mostly from ME countries.

Well I never believed it would be, and I'd be shocked if when drug dealers are found, the govt doesn't find a way to begin an investigation without revealing the initial spying. But, think it will become more prevelan, and throw away cells will become a thing of the past.

I will say it bothers me less than what I think will be changes in how private citizens interact. We will not want to be in crowds.

Simple answer, none.

The meter maid and FBI stuff, I was obviously speaking with my tongue in my cheek.

However, the march toward totalitarianism is a very definite threat. Today, as if on cue, we find Trump saying he would close mosques.

To answer this question all you have to do is ask them about Stop and Frisk. The people that support it dont care about rights as long as its aimed at the "right people".

Which I thought they learned from when the CIA admitted they were wiretapping everyone. But hey, what goes around comes around

You really doubt the NSA, CIA, Homeland Security and FBI don't already have a working set of documents as to what freedom limitations will be requested after the next really really bloody attack?

Conservative Make an Appeal to Fear and to Violence Liberals Make an Appeal to Compassion and a search for solutions.... Are you like Ted Nugent

walking funny because you are carrying a pants load of Conservatism on your rear or will you stand tall like a Liberal strong enough to feel compassion wise enough to find solutions that do not involve the copious use of Trinitrotoluene............

And I said that that isn't going to happen for obvious and very good reasons. But, let's ask the question, what if a Christian church were found that was fomenting revolution, what would/could be done?

Remember WACO?

HWGA and Edward are poorly read on the subject, and they both place ideology before context and nuance.

And you cant put together a coherent sentence.
See, you caught it. But that was the only thing you caught.

You place ideology before context, and that is why you end up in hidden byways trying to find your way out.

LOL....I love it when some clown tries to use big words when they have zero meaning in the context of the discussion, desperately trying to sound intelligent is a sad way to go through life fakey.

I don't know.... let's hope not. But hey, I remember a president who actually did suspend habeus corpus.. and jail journalists... and purportedly threatened to jail the Chief Justice of the SCOTUS. I also remember a president that interned American citizens....

Some act like this shit all started on 9/11.
