I think Trump can win a trade war with China, so long as he doesn't go Hitler for a two-three front

Trump trying to compete/ outthink / outsmart / outmaneuver / outflank China ('win' a trade war) is like watching a loud mouth drunk asshole take a sobriety test. The cops (China) just roll their eyes, "only a few drinks you say, sir..."

He is so out of his league.

Trump thinks moment to moment. China looks decades ahead...

Yes he can, because China needs American money FAR more than America needs trashy little trinkets from China.

There's too many money makers in China that are skating on thin ice to able to weather a trade war with America. Our economy is booming, thanks to president Trump, their's isn't. They like their money, and if they see that the only way to KEEP making money is level the playing the field, they're going to do it. Same with the E.U., who has already capitulated.

It would sure help if liberals dropped their partisan based criticism. This policy is good for America, regardless of who's policy it is. Trump is uniquely positioned to wage this battle. He is neither indebted to Big Business, nor dependent on them for reelection. This is literally a once in a generation opportunity.

U.S. retailers, shoe companies urge Trump not to hit China with tariffs

A number of major national retailers, including Menomonee Falls-based Kohl’s, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart, have sent a letter to President Donald Trump to express their concerns about the impact of the president’s proposed tariffs.

The letter, signed by retailers that represent $1.5 trillion in annual sales and tens of million of American jobs, said the industry is concerned that any benefits from reform for retailers and families will be wiped out by broadly applied tariffs on every day consumer products. The retailers are joined in their concerns by the Retail Industry Leaders Association, American Apparel & Footwear Association and the National Retail Federation.

Well I suppose the term "win" is vague.

Few of the jobs are coming back in any event. But China manipulates its currency to make its goods cheaper in dollars and our good more expensive in yuan. Other countries in the EU and Canada give supports to some goods and some sectors. The French I believe are very protective of their cheese. However, the US certainly provides agricultural subsidies as well. They made Jodi Ernst a very wealthy person.

But assuming Trump could possibly focus on the unique aspects of China trade, retailers could buy goods from elsewhere for sale here.

Hmmm...I wonder why?

...Milk prices are going down steadily due to tariffs on American cheese so I'm guessing Republicans will come in to save the day after they created the problem in the 1st place; here comes more subsidies to save those Congressional seats! :aargh:

"Patience" is a virtue, and this case, trade wars aren't won overnight.

These companies are idiots. They're not seeing how much BETTER they'll have it once there are no tariffs or trade barriers.

that's so funny.... the criticism isn't "liberal". most of the country, most republican leadership and all of the world think he's a psycho.

i'm sorry hearing that offends you, but it isn't partisan. the man is an idiot.

The experts in the article say otherwise. You don't get as rich and powerful as he was by being dumb. He knows how to get things done,he knows how to get the right people in the right positions and its not always the first person you hire either but he knows how to fire those that don't do the right job.

so WTF does Trump win ?

he's already cost soy bean farmers 81.7 million pounds of sales - did he win the empty burlap sacks ?
Link?

How about that 270% tariff caniduh has on American dairy? How's that helping American farmers?

Milk prices here have been the same for over a year. 2.35 a gallon at walmart.

Is that why he's a BILLIONAIRE and the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES?

And you have to pretend to be a lawyer on a message board and spew your ignorant leftist gas.

Pfft... idiot.

Most of the Republican "leadership" is in the pocket of Big Business.

You know, the rich get richer at the expense of the little guys.

And where are the liberals (yourself included) that have been preaching this for 50 years?

Firmly on the side of the corporations who benefit from outsourcing...that's where.

Wage inequality, wage stagnation, living wage??? How do we achieve this when a US company that pays a high wage is undercut by a company outsourcing manufacturing, or food processing, or over the phone tech support to countries that pay labor a fraction of what US workers need to make?

It's hypocrisy of the worst sort...or cognitive dissidence of the highest magnitude.

Trump wants what liberals have been screaming for...higher wages for Americans, better jobs for Americans, a level playing field for American Workers.

And where are the liberals?

Fighting it tooth and nail...not because they disagree...but because Trump can't be allowed to succeed.

"Fuck You American Workers! We're the Anti-Trump Party Now" should be the new Democrat Party Slogan...

But I remember reading about this right after Trump declared his trade war against China, and the Chinese were trying to keep their currency up by buying foreign currencies, because it was going down after Trump's statements.

At the same time, Trump has said he wants to devalue the dollar so the US will do more trade, and the dollar has gone down some.

He has also declared trade war against all of the US's major trading partners except for the UK (and perhaps a few other countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia) : Canada, Mexico and the EU.

I know. Shit flows downhill though..our prices should rise or fall depending on how much the producers are selling it for etc...they haven't moved.
