I'm a Canadian who's lived in the US for over 30 years. I don't get why so many Americans want to move to Canada.

Americans don't understand Canadas police state.

You will in time I presume.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jim D., a Canadian who moved to the US when he was 27 and now lives in Arizona between Flagstaff and Phoenix. Jim, 59, asked to withhold his full last name because of privacy concerns. Business Insider has verified his identity. The conversation was edited for length and clarity.

I was born and raised in Fort Frances, Ontario, across from International Falls, Minnesota, the coldest spot in America — they call it the freezer of America.

Fort Frances is a little border town with a population of 7,000.

I grew up crossing the border. We were always running into Minnesota. Gas was cheaper, and groceries were cheaper. Our money was worth more back then, so we got more value for our Canadian dollar when we went shopping in the States.

Honestly, no one is dreaming of moving to Canada. Never once heard anyone say they'd like it better over there. And I live in Metro Detroit. We go to Windsor a lot. Or used to before you had to take a passport with you just to go gamble. As soon as the Detroit Casino's opened that was it.

Anyways, Windsor is great. Compared to Detroit? Yea, I could see poor Detroiters wanting to move across the river. More jobs, safer, nicer. But no one who's middle class in Metro Detroit wants to move to Canada. No one.

Are these poor people? I'll have to go read your article.

And if you don't have healthcare here in America, that might be a reason why someone would want to move. Or if the person doesn't like our gun culture.

I have relatives in Don Mills Ontario. Their kids all go to school here in America but that doesn't mean they can stay after they graduate. They want to. And the young people I know who don't have degrees wish they could come here. It's not easy.

Also, Trump and Republicans make people want to leave America.

when you leaving :doubt:

when you leaving :doubt:

Seems to me it's only conservatives who are leaving. Leaving California and NY. Leaving the country because they can't afford to live here anymore. I live on a lake with a pontoon boat. Does it sound like I can't afford to live here?

OMG, we went out on my boat yesterday. When I graduated college I was living with my parents and saving up for a $150,000 home. Back then that's what they went for. But we found my condo on the lake for $58,000. Today it's worth $200K. So we were talking about this yesterday. For $85K I got a condo on a lake and a pontoon boat. Pretty fucking smart huh? Obviously the condo has been paid off for years and I paid cash for the pontoon boat because I had no house payment.

The only time I will leave is when I go visit Greece in the summer, when I retire at age 62.

Don't be cheap!
Well I bet you didn't even look at it nor are you a subscriber. You just liked the title. If I'm wrong, cut and paste something interesting from the article that tells us why people say they are moving to Canada. I don't believe it. I think you work for the WSJ and are trying to get us to subscribe. LOL.

The article is free for me, besides there are ways to gain access through free archive sites online.

I am not feeling very well today and our healthcare system has betrayed me thanks to the Creepy Ones outreach. I am not in any capacity to assist you in this endeavour, but it is easy to search and learn through education.

Well it makes me feel good that you say it's better over here. Because I'm already here.

I know a few Canadians who worked in the healthcare field in the US, and happily retired back home in Canada.

I guess all the terrible things you post about Canada reveal more about your worldview and mental state, than they do about realities in Canada.

My "mental state"?

Good work Goebbels I'm sure there is a path to heaven just awaiting you for your loyalty. Loyalty to what is the question.

Wait a minute, you said "Also, Trump and Republicans make people want to leave America."
Where are these people going?

Have to be honest.. I would never live in a "condo"
Smart people live on "land", no HOA, no neighbors for miles.

By chance, are you a manager of a sneaker store at a mall?

Now the police in Canada work with the car thieves. WTF is wrong with that place?

Why do you bother getting out of bed every day? Or do you?
There are many people with far less health issues than I have faced the last couple of years. I still do my best and I don't have the luxury of being out on disability.

My life was stolen from me, I am not alone in this country.

Only a nation looking to destroy what amounts to many trillions of global goodwill would dare to follow in our footsteps and accept the narrative some countries promote. This goodwill can't be measured but it has to be Americas greatest asset. So...

If the FBI or CIA wanted to destroy their own reputation and that of their country one effective means would be to alter their fidelity to the U.S Constitution to become more like "them" (us). China has been jumping on this by playing one side while Russia plays the other, they both mirror the same message "look at the U.S. Are they truly what they say they are?"

This message has been effective, they are making inroads globally and no matter how some try to frame it, it is working.

What cost would the U.S, their citizens and future generations pay for becoming more like Canada et al? For betraying your principles to support and believe the lies that some nations promote?

We aren't like you Jack, accept this and stop bending the knee.

Little children stomp out of the room when they don't get what they want. But where do they stomp to? Not far. In time they need to use the facilities and get a snack from the fridge.

You are most likely disabled. our posts alone prove that.

I'm glad you said "our posts".

However, speak for yourself, I am of sound mind. I just learned far too much and the Creepy Ones don't like that I am not a flimsy citizen like those they persuade to assist them.

If I were in France when the Germans invaded I would be part of the Resistance not one of the collaborators.
