Back in September, Alexandria Marie Shields and Taylor Butcher booked the Knights of Columbus hall in Madison, Indiana for the reception that will follow their upcoming wedding ceremony. On Monday, Knights of Columbus Council 934 called the couple to tell them it was refunding their deposit as they do not agree with same-sex unions. Wednesday evening, the council reversed course and has agreed to let them have the facility.

In an interview with ThinkProgress on Wednesday, Butcher described the past two days as “very frustrating.” Months into the wedding preparations, they suddenly received a call Monday informing them that they could not use the venue — which was not even going to be used for the ceremony — because the organization cannot support a same-sex wedding. She and her fiancee already sent out save the dates and posted a wedding website with the details of their location. Now, she worried, if they need to find a venue outside of Madison, many of the hundreds of invited family and friends will have to find new hotels.

But in a Facebook post Wednesday evening, the Knights of Columbus said it would allow the reception after all. It posted “Council 934 regrets that there was some confusion over the hall rental request and that no contract was ever signed. We are happy to accommodate Taylor’s request to hold her reception there and we will waive the usual hall rental fee, given the misunderstanding that occurred.” As of press time, Butcher said no one from the council had directly contacted them to share this news and it is unclear whether this is a one-time exception or indicative of genuine a policy change.

Same-sex marriage became legal in Indiana in October, after the Supreme Court let stand an appeals court ruling that the state’s ban violated the U.S. constitution and was “based on hate.” But Indiana has no statewide non-discrimination protections for LGBT citizens and Madison is not one of the handful of Indiana localities that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

The Knights of Columbus, a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society, calls itself the “strong right arm” of the Catholic Church and has spent millions to oppose LGBT equality, abortion, euthanasia, and pornography. But while the national organization explicitly prohibits the rental of Knights’ facilities to those who “who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, or who advocate the legalization of assisted suicide or euthanasia,” it has not done taken that stand on the issue of same-sex marriage. Neither the local council nor its Grand Knight responded immediately to a ThinkProgress inquiry about its policies.

Butcher said that she and Shields have been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received. “We’ve gotten a lot more support on this than we thought we were going to be getting. We weren’t expecting people to go to their Facebook page and rate them with 1 star.” And, she said, “because everyone we know is making a big deal out of it, that’s what’s helping and making them feel the pressure.” Perhaps responding to the uproar, the council had posted on Tuesday evening that it was “discussing this issue and exploring options to resolve it. A portion of the council disagrees with the decision that was made.”

Homosexuals are evil? People who support equal rights for homosexuals are evil?

So you do believe that homosexuals who get married and those heterosexuals who support it are evil.

And you wonder why I'm disgusted.

You can call me names and insult me all you want. It still doesn't change the fact that I support freedom and our constitution for everyone.

You don't.

Facts show that your views are unconstitutional and illegal here in America. Court after court has ruled that it's unconstitutional to discriminate against homosexuals. So your belief that we're all evil means nothing. It just disgusts us that we have such hateful people in America.

If a person doesn't believe that they have that right too.

What makes you think you're so special that you have the right to tell anyone what they can do in their own church?

You nor anyone else has the right to force your beliefs on anyone else. Much less a private church.

If the leaders of that that church want to have a homosexual wedding reception at their church they have that right and no one has any right to stop them.

I never said that a church has to do something they believe is a sin.

In fact, if that church didn't change their minds, by law they have that right. They're a church. Not a business and don't have to follow public accommodation laws like businesses do.

A private church has the right to do whatever they want within our laws.

It just so happens that the congregation of that church doesn't believe that it's a sin. The leaders of that church listened to their congregation and did what the congregation requested.

Intelligence welcomes change.

Homosexuals are evil? People who support equal rights for homosexuals are evil?

People like you never stop disgusting me.

Who cares if they disgust you? It's their religion and they are free to believe whatever they want, it doesn't harm anyone.

Progressives that want to force a religion to change to conform to their beliefs disgusts me.

A person calls changing minds about homosexual marriage evil.

So I'm disgusted that the poster thinks that the homosexuals who get married and heterosexuals who support it are evil.

I'm not trying to change anything. I'm not christian and I could careless what any christian sect does in their church.

Meanwhile some think it's evil to have a homosexual wedding reception at a church.

Why can't you be happy to live your life as you choose? Why do you have to force everyone else to live that way too? Why do you believe you have the right to take freedoms from people?

If that church wants to change their minds about having that reception they have that right. It's not up to you or anyone else to judge what they do on their own private property.

Quit whining. For somebody who doesn't want to be judgmental, you're pretty judgmental.

I made a mistake in the thread title - they held the reception - not the wedding ceremony.

Sorry.

Sounds like the Knights of Columbus are doing the right thing. They probably agreed to reserving the hall for a wedding reception because they thought it was for the reception for a Christian wedding (Alexandria and Taylor). When they found out it was a gay union, the KofC probably went "wait a minute....we shouldn't do this" and looked into canceling. After considering that the gay union itself was not going to happen in the hall, and that it would be very difficult for the party to be re-scheduled/relocated, they went ahead and, using their Christian love and tolerance, didn't want to ruin the party, so they agreed.

Sounds like the KofC did the right thing.

More likely, it had to do with money and public pressure.

Its the KofC so no, it had nothing to do with christian, love or tolerance.

After considering that the gay union itself was not going to happen in the hall, and that it would be very difficult for the party to be re-scheduled/relocated, they went ahead and, using their Christian love and tolerance, didn't want to ruin the party, so they agreed.

Sounds like the KofC did the right thing.
While that is probably what happened it is highly unlikely that they will be making the same mistake again.

Little by little, the Constitution is winning and so are the people.
Little by little evil is winning.

Homosexuals are evil? People who support equal rights for homosexuals are evil?

People like you never stop disgusting me.
Your disgust is part of your mental disorder, take your meds.

You have no idea what I support. I support the Constitution but most of all believe what the Bible, Gods word, says. Christians do not support gay marriage. I know one thing guaranteed, my church will not be performing gay marriagees.

You have no right to speak for all christians. The subject of this thread proves your post wrong. That church is having a reception for a gay wedding inside their church. At the insisting of the congregation after the leaders said no.

There are millions of christians who support gay marriage.

Just because your church won't be performing gay weddings or have gay wedding receptions doesn't mean other christian churches won't.

Why do you believe that everyone is like you? Why don't you believe that we all are free to make up our own minds without you telling us what to believe?

I'm not christian so whatever your bible says doesn't apply to me or my life. If you want to live your life by the christian bible go for it but stop trying to force it on everyone else.

It's called freedom of religion. You might want to check out the first amendment.

Whining?

It wasn't me who claimed that evil was winning.

Seems to me you were whining about gays having the right to get married and have their reception in a church.

It was me who pointed out how disgusted I am that we have people like you in our nation.

I'm not judging you. You can be whatever you want to be. I'm not telling you to not be like that. I do have the right to be disgusted by you.

It's called freedom. If you don't like it that's your problem.
