Is the US to blame for all of Cuba's ills?

All? No. Do we still have justifications for sanctions? Absolutely not. Cuba is an excellent example to show why sanctions do not work and only harm the people.

Did sanctions on Cuba for 60 years change anything? No.

Would the people be better off today if we had opened relations with Cuba? I will say, yes.
JFK and his peculiar A.G. brother (and the CIA) ruined relations with Cuba with their exploding cigar diplomacy and criminal attempts to support an invasion army but the media loved Camelot and JFK could do no wrong.
The Russians Backed Down Only Because the CIA Agreed to Get Rid of the Kennedy Brothers

Because of indecision, JFK let Cuban patriots get slaughtered on the beaches of the Bay of Pigs. Shamed for that, he went to the other extreme and became a loose cannon who almost provoked nuclear war. Being praised for that successful but reckless policy, he would have gotten us as deeply into Vietnam as LBJ did.

I have never understood why the United States has not overthrown the Cuban dictatorship by now.

This nation has overthrown many Latin American governments without a moment's thought.

Maybe it has something to do with some kind of quid pro quo with Russia or another nation???
Crisis Management

Getting rid of the Kennedys, taking our missiles out of Turkey, and not overthrowing the Castro regime—a small price to pay for avoiding nuclear war. For their part of the deal, the Russian deep state also deposed Khrushchev.

The U.S. is the source of ALL the world's ills from time immemorial. We are a blight upon humanity, there is absolutely nothing worthy about us and we should feel nothing but shame for all that we have wrought.

"O.K., teacher, NOW will I get a passing grade on this test?"
Automaton Factory

That's all a degree and and even a high GPA mean: how accurately the robotic formerly intelligent student mindlessly repeats the professors' sermons.

Americans need to understand that Cuba has been lost to China now.
China's influence is already very large in Cuba and will become much moreso as China moves with caution.

America has the ability to make strategic moves in China's sphere of influence too and that tempers China's progress.

But nobody should be thinking that America has any chance of restoring any influence back in Cuba.

America's current fomenting of protest against Cuba's government is going to die out as it becomes insignificant. America waited too long to do the right thing. Obama tried but the ignorant asshole that replaced him destroyed any chance America could have had.

Now Cuba is fast becoming a huge foreign policy mistake and strategic loss to America.

Just one more example of Trump's chickens coming home.

Huge costs come to America over their outrageiously stupid choice of a psychopath as their president.

Joe Biden Lifts Sanctions on Venezuela, Giving Cuba a Lifeline

The U.S. Department of the Treasury on Monday lifted sanctions on the export of gas to socialist Venezuela, a boon to the dictatorship in Caracas and its patron government in communist Cuba, which struggles to suppress mounting opposition and calls for the regime’s total abolition.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued a general license number 40, permitting “all transactions and activities related to the exportation or reexportation, directly or indirectly, of liquefied petroleum gas to Venezuela” as well as the socialist regime’s state-owned affiliates, specifically rescinding restrictions that then-President Donald Trump imposed via three executive orders in 2018 and 2019. The license remains valid through July 8, 2022.

Commies gotta stick together, right?

America waited too long to do the right thing. Obama tried

Giving Castro concessions while getting nothing in return was Obama "trying"?

That's funny!!
Your comment doesn't measure up to this conversation on Cuba.
Even though it's silly, it's still not worthy of debate or discussion.
Racist feelings against Obama?

So how did his "try" help the Cuban people? What concessions did he get from Castro?

Racist feelings against Obama?

He was a useless twat, but not because he was black(ish).

What exactly are we supposed to "get in return"?

For ending sanctions.....how about some new freedoms for the Cuban people?

Of should we end sanctions and not ask for anything in return?

We should not enact sanctions. That only hurts the people. Tell me, what did sanctions the last 60 years accomplish? If Cuba wants freedoms they have to do what some have been doing. Demand it internally.

Please explain to me where sanctions on Cuba made any difference.

We already had them. What should we get for lifting them?

That only hurts the people.

They also hurt the dictators.

If Cuba wants freedoms they have to do what some have been doing.

And what should we do if the commies machine gun a couple of thousand protestors?

You ignored my question. I'll accept your white flag.

If people like Joe Biden and Marco Rubio actually cared about Cuban lives, they would lift the crippling blockade and end the 62-year-old US war against Cuba.

whatever legitimate grievances Cubans have with their government would likely be eclipsed by the news of a Washington-led regime change operation coming to their shores. But make no mistake: all of this is the typical wink-and-a-nod vernacular of Washington regime change.

also note the irony of US officials, particularly on the Right, backing regime change in a country because it’s experiencing mass protests, part of which are driven by unhappiness with its government’s pandemic response. If this was a consistently applied standard, then the EU and Canada should have invaded the United States to remove Trump during last year’s massive George Floyd–inspired protests, which were motivated both by widespread repression of ordinary Americans by police forces and by the presence of a leader widely labeled authoritarian.

You posted your opinion. I posted a PBS analysis. Keep whining.
A PBS analysis means nothing in the context of this issue.
I'm not "whining". I have nothing to whine about.

Again, sixty years of US policy towards Cuba went before whatever you think Trump did.

That's like saying the very last time you were slapped by your mother, not all the times before,
turned you into the pathetic clown you are. Now fuck off and stay fucked off!
Bullshit.

Obama rolled back sanctions and made things easier for the communist regime in Cuba. So you lose again.

We had sanctions because.....fuck Castro.

You're welcome.

Should we do anything if Cuba kills a couple of thousand protestors?

I never realized Castro had it hard. Could you explain this to us?

Right, they made no difference whatsoever. Castro led a long life.

There is nothing we can do.
