If a person goes to a doctor to get an abortion, it's called a medical abortion.

When a fertilized egg is removed from a woman's body by a doctor it's a medical abortion.

That egg doesn't have to be inside the uterus.

In fact, that's what an ectopic pregnancy is. A fertilized egg that has no implanted in the uterus but in or outside the felopian tube.

The doctor does a laparoscopy, that is they surgically go through the woman's belly button into the uterus or Fallopian tubes to remove the fertilized egg.

The woman has had a positive pregnancy test. The ectopic pregnancy isn't found for weeks into the pregnancy when it can be caught on an ultra sound. Seeing it on the ultra sound is the only way to find out about it before it kills the woman. It's one of the reasons why ultra sounds are done as early as possible in the pregnancy, especially high risk pregnancies.
