While I think this whole Redskin thing is silly, because I just thought the name implied a tough, strong, lean and mean team that would be hard to beat....I haven't kept up on this topic, so I don't know the whole past history behind why those are against it?

There is a difference between recognizing one as a human being, a Red MAN, vs just calling one a red 'skin', like a hide or skin of a cow or a hide or a skin of a pig....skin....just a skin....not a man, not a human, but a skin of something....?

The term 'redskin' was commonly used in the U.S. to mean 'Native American'. It was somewhat derogatory. It certainly isn't used much anymore, but I'm sure you'd find it in use in a few John Wayne films. The term 'Redman' really does have much common use or meaning.

The weird thing is that I'm sure that the football team named themselves the 'Redskins' out of respect for Native American warriors - I doubt they'd give themselves a derogatory name.

Either way if native Americans feel it's derogatory, then the team should change it's name - not a big deal.

This is all about the sacrosanct status of the NFL (AFL?) and their fans proving that they can't be pushed around by the politically correct crowd.
