A new study shows that the majority of public school children in the United States are living in poverty.
The report, conducted by the Southern Education Foundation, drew its conclusions from data revealing how many public school children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.
For the first time on record, 51 percent of students are living in poverty. There are an estimated 74 .5 million children in the US.
Study authors said they have noticed a continuing trend of increased poverty levels since 1989, when 32 percent of students qualified for these types of meals. By 2000, the number had risen to 38 percent. In 2013, it had gone up another 13 percent, according to information from the National Center for Education Statistics.

What will be the fate of public schools? Will they become an abide for immigrants and little criminals? Nobody doesn't want his child to attend lessons in a public school. We really need the revise of our educational system! the Government doesn't take care of it's children.

The government doesn't have any children. Get the illegals and their spawn out of the country, problem solved.

Don't be ridiculous. The president just told us over the past few months, and in his State of the Union address, that unemployment is 5% and everything is coming up roses. The economy is great, and people are dancing in the streets, and there is no crime anymore. So quit posting this racist crap. You make the president look bad.

BULLSHIT........This is an easy one......School districts receive for each child on the free or reduced price lunch program, a stipend which far and away exceeds the potential expense of feeding each kid. So it is in the school districts best interest to enroll as many kids on the program as possible.
In fact, each child is at the beginning of each school year, required to have their parent/guardian fill out and return the form. KIds in our school district encouraged to have their parent check "yes" to accept the program....Oh....Here in NC anyway as well as federal law prohibit school administrations and other officials form doing any income verification....
The whole program is a scam on the taxpayers, a boon to the USDA, school districts and farmers that participate in food production for the program....There are lots of people with a vested financial interest in seeing the program continue and grow....

And there is the problem with this 'report.'

It is based on an asinine metric. Reduced lunches don't really have any connection with actual poverty and are not managed even remotely similar. Every damn district has another method of dealing with the program.

Are you time traveling? Because you posted this on January 17th, 2015, yet the State of the Union address isn't until the 20th of January, 2015.

How is it that you can see what happens on Saturday, those things that will occur on Tuesday?

More importantly, tell me this: Is there going to be anything in Obama's SOTUA that ISN'T going to be a repetitive litany of the crap he's been trying to peddle for 6 years? He's like a wind-up doll. "Jobs, jobs, jobs...duhhh...the economy, the economy, the economy...duhhh...etc., ad nauseam.

Actually, jobs have been increasing for a very long time.

The economy is doing better than it ever did under Jr.

Sorry..............but your post is a fail.

Why are 42 million people on food stamps? Why does Forbes put the real unemployment rate in America at 11.4%? Why do 42% of Colorado residents live in poverty?

Some schools just don't even bother to get the money out of the 5% that aren't free/reduced eligible.

It isn't worth the effort.

Why are 42 million people on food stamps?

Because you Republicans in Congress won't lower the income number that is used to qualify for food stamps.
Just think, all you got to do is make the number, lets say 10k. Any one making more than 10k a year (15k if you have 2 or more kids) can not qualify for food stamps. Let em go to the food banks.

Why won't you Republican do that? You have the majority in both houses now. And the wind is at your backs. ALL Americans are tired of those poor people getting a free lunch, and dinner, and breakfast.

All you Repubs have to do is lower one little number. The income qualifying number. And you can't even do that. What good are Republicans?

Look at the source. the Dept of education. So next it will be, show me the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ so we can correct this
