DIVIDE ET IMPERA
The Media keeps saying the GOP is the party of white men. And they usually add the words "angry" and "old". But suddenly, when they talk about women and young people, journalists become race and gender-neutral. So we read things like these:
"Obama's reelection marks a turning point in American politics: With the growing power of minorities, women and gays, it's the end of the world as straight white males know it."
"No country for angry old white men"
"No longer your father's electorate"
"Women and minorities to the left; white men to the right"
"Dear Republicans, This is Not Your Parents' White House"
But, according to the 2012 national exit poll, the gap is not that huge:
White men: 62% for Romney
White women: 56% for Romney (best result since Reagan 84)
White 30-44 year old: 59% for Romney
White 45-64 year old: 61% for Romney
White 65+ year old: 61% for Romney
The left-leaning gender gap is not uncommon in Europe; sure is not a U.S.-only phenomenon. And the age gap too, of course.
A recent UK poll:
"Female support for the Conservatives is plummeting as among women 26 per cent more would vote for Labour - 51 to 25 - whereas Labour only get seven per cent more support from men - 36 to 29."
Note: UK conservatives have passed gay marriage
