Just because the Big Orange Idiot has ordered you to change the filibuster rule to suit his agenda, does not guarantee that rule change will not come back to bite the GOP in the a$$.
In its current form, the filibuster rule is an inconvenience when the minority Democrats stall the legislative process. But if you remember, the Republicans have used the filibuster to great effect in the past.
There are several possible scenarios where the Republicans could lose their Senate majority in 2018. One being to start another needless ground war, this time with North Korea. To provide the necessary manpower for such a war would inevitably require reinstatement of the draft.
We all know how short the voters’ memories can be, but as was proved in the late ‘60s, the fastest way to create legions of liberals is to draft moderate Republicans’ children to die in a useless war. Moderates don’t care if enlistees die by the thousands. In their minds, enlistees asked for it. But they will NOT feel the same seeing their own children drafted and fed into a meat grinder. Remember Vietnam? Or is your addled old Republican brain too feeble to recall that debacle.
Yes, the Vietnam war made the defense industry billions-of-dollars in profits, but so have the minor wars in the Middle East. But in North Korea, U.S. troops will be fighting a well trained, well equipped military, not a rag tag bunch of disorganized terrorist groups. You shouldn’t permit yourself to be blinded by conservative greed, as happens all too often.
So, before you make the mistake and change a rule that can greatly help a future Democratic majority, consider all the possible ramifications.
Will the Senate ever change its rules and eliminate the filibuster as Trump has demanded?
