Cantor mistakes $1.2 million NSF grant for ‘World of Warcraft’ study

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor criticized a $1.2 million National Science Foundation grant earlier this week, and in the process, incorrectly identified the grant as going towards research on seniors playing the video game “World of Warcraft” (WoW).

Cantor said Tuesday in a tweet and on his blog that President Barack Obama wanted to spend U.S. taxpayer money on WoW.

— Eric Cantor (@GOPLeader) February 19, 2013

On his blog, Cantor further specified, “The National Science Foundation spent $1.2 million paying seniors to play ‘World of Warcraft’ to study the impact it had on their brain.”

House Speaker John Boehner quickly followed behind Cantor in a Thursday Wall Street Journal op-ed by repeating the falsehood when he criticized Obama on tax policy.

“Meanwhile, no one should be talking about raising taxes when the government is still paying people to play videogames, giving folks free cellphones, and buying $47,000 cigarette-smoking machines”, said Boehner.

WoW Insider — a blog devoted to World of Warcraft — called out Cantor’s inaccuracy Wednesday, stating that the WoW study he was referring to was conducted in between 2008 and 2009 by the North Carolina State University Gains Through Gaming Lab.

Free warcraft..according to Cantor!

Oh..the outrage!

I really have a hard time feeling the outrage over this when I, as a gun owner, am being accused of being unable to control myself, therefore I have to get government approval for every gun I buy, that I shouldn't be able to own a gun because it is scary looking, and that I can't have a magazine that holds more than 7 rounds.

Really hard to feel the outrage.

This isn't about guns.

This is about Cantor lying about something.

Which is almost every time that dude opens his mouth.

Stay focused.

Seriously, How can you do a study of ‘World of Warcraft’ without playing the game?

Sallow it's obvious Cantor made a mistake. They pass so much fucking pork most of it probably goes by unnoticed. Having said that Obama DID say he wanted to fund research into the affects video games have on people. He even directed the CDC to conduct the study. So it's easy to see where the confusion came from.

After the Sandy shooting BOTH sides wanted to point fingers at video games. Idiots, the lot of them.

Wow Sallow, you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel to find something to whine about.

An expert on the topic, Lt. Grossman and author of "On Killing", one of the most famous and relevant books ever on the topic, agrees with Obama that video games need to be studied.

The military and police have used video games for 2 decades to train their trigger pullers to react and condition them to the possibility of taking human life (in addition to other tactics). So, when we raise 2 generations of millions of kids who are getting nearly the exact same mental conditioning in their living rooms.....its worth a study.

Now, of course, the right wing will bitch and whine and call it a waste of their beloved tax dollar, and say the best response to this is to just arm even more people.

Your head needs to be studied. The right has been screaming about video games for years and now more so.

Also what quallifies your so called "expert" as an expert on video games and its relation to murder? Has he played said games and personally experienced the trauma they cause:cuckoo:

Ok. Let's assume we do the studies and those studies indicate playing video games have some connection to real life events. What then? Are you willing to let the government tell you what is good for you to read, see or play? Because if you are not, then what is the point of the studies?

The USAF is already tapping into those skills with their Drone people.

Um, his extensive military background. He is one of a handful of world reknowned experts on the topic, his book "On Killing" is nearly mandatory reading for any instructor at any police academy in the country, and, well........you know, if you dont know this guy or haven't heard of the book, then you need to study up on it. Google it yourself.

Yep. Unfortunately, those same conditioned youth also have the ability to be mentally unstable, and go on shooting sprees when they are all fucked up on a cocktail of meds some doctor prescribed just because the family has health insurance.

We've desensitized and conditioned an entire generation on video games, and expect there to be no consequence.

It won't matter

This story will enter the world of conservative mythology and be repeated over and over as "fact"

There is NO DOUBT that video games can desensitize children if their parents dont dotheir jobs as parents. But so does movies, tv, comic books, cartoons and fist fights in school.

The idea that they cause violence in youth is absurd. Millions upon millions grew up playing games and only a few turned into killers.

Saying games cause violencw is like saying gay couples on tv cause homosexuality. Ignorance is bliss

It doesn't "cause" violence. It desensitizes one to violence, conditions one to accept the possibility of violence. Thats why the military and police use the same principles to contition their people to the possibility of violence. Video games and paintball in the general public arent that far apart from the video simulators and "sim gun" training the military and police do.

Thats why you need to read his book if you want to learn about this topic. The process simply removes one of the barriers in the mind that may prevent one from carrying out a violent act. Removes one element of hesitation.

So, it doesn't cause violence, but it removes one of the mental barriers to the possibility of violence.
