New Orleans Mayor PURGING City’s Confederate History Because IT’S OFFENSIVE

Unbelievable, looks like the lib/dem/blacks are taking after ISIS in this day age. really they should tear down the whole city. and look who the mayor is. These city councils are stepping over their bounds as elected officials of a city. that should be voted on by the people living there. first Portland, now this. shameful

SNIP:
Since the AME Charleston Church shooting, liberals have been going after history that they deem ‘racist.’ The latest instance is New Orleans’ Mayor Mitch Landrieu who is officially removing historical monuments.

The Hayride reports:

The New Orleans City Council voted 6-1 today to remove four historical monuments in the city: Robert E Lee Circle, PGT Beauregard’s City Park statue, the Jefferson Davis monument and the Liberty Place monument.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu first requested the proposal back in June after the AME Charleson Church shooting. At the time, Landrieu said he wanted to hold a “60-day discussion period” so that residents could converse about the four monuments on the chopping block.

Update: Here’s a photo Mayor Mitch Landrieu tweeted out showing him signing the ordinance to officially remove four historical monuments in the city. Councilwoman Stacy Head, the lone ‘no’ vote on removal is the only New Orleans City Council member not standing beside Landrieu.

Why does removing various statues 'purge' history? Are these things not written down? You think statues are the only way people learn about history? That is like needing a picture book, rather than a history book, to learn and know history.

OP is a fail. Where is the Plymouth rock? Which rock is it? How are people supposed to know the history of the Pilgrims?

Laughable nonsense. Its way past time to get rid of these SYMBOLS of racism and hatred that the south has taken comfort in since they lost the Civil War. The south lost, get over it.

And we welcomed them back into the country, and let them keep their symbols and memories of the "lost cause". Now we are washing over that part of the healing process, because "people in the past were bad compared to our morals now".

Again, when should I expect all those "Malcolm X Blvd" signs to be taken down?

It is a non-issue. The history is in books, the public symbols are not history, they are public displays intended to invoke emotional ties to a failed ideology and worldview.

You would have been right at home with the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

The Coliseum in Rome I guess is next on your list, right?

Nice. You don't see any Hitler statues when you're walking around in Germany do you?

Godwin's law fail on the first page.

And to be sure there will be lawsuits. It will take decades to get those Statues down if some groups decide to play hardball.
. The Sons of the Confederacy should take action immediately. These people ARE acting like ISIS by erasing this country's history. Are they going to tear down the historical church in Jackson Square area next?

No that was your father's cause. His participation in the Red Guards rubbed off on you? Just give it up Percy, not worth the fight.

Nah they'll come down. It's long past time we stopped celebrating those evil bastards.

Whitewashing history doesn't make it go away. and "Evil" is a bit strong, considering slavery was still acceptable in many parts of the world (but waning) at the time, including Africa.

You guys keep defining evil down, and it makes people unable to see real, true evil.
The evil comes from the resolve to maintain the institution and the hatred with which it was administered during the period that it was waning here as well. They were our Nazi Reich, in fact the worst scourge the US has faced in our history.

Confederates were nowhere NEAR as bad as the Nazis. The Nazis exterminated an entire religous/ethnic group in their borders, they starved slavs for economic gain, they made people "disappear" to create fear in occupied territories (Nacht und Nebel), they had plans for a Europe ruled by Germans, with slavic serfs.

STOP IT. The Confederates were backwards by our standards, and they were fighting for a terrible cause, but they were not as bad as Nazis. Stop. It.
Do you know how analogies are used?

Yes. Confederates had grey uniforms and nazis went with black or tan. We had a group of racist ideologues whose resolve on matters of racial subjugation was so intense that they were willing to die for it. They affected the Nazi serfdom you describe right here in the United States... as I describe.

You went as far as "as bad as". My statement is more like "our version of". A confederate US is far worse than a Nazi Europe. Maybe that's why more of our blood and treasure was poured into eradicating your southern heroes than was spent on Hitler.

The comparison is not valid, and only trivializes what the Nazi's actually did. We forgave the South as part of the process of getting the country back together, and you idiots want to re-open old wounds just to make your stupid political points.

And fuck you about the whole "southern heroes" thing.
Statues are for heroes. They should be stamping pennies out of those assholes.

We forgave Germany, but being contrite, they don't have Hitler bronzes all over the place.

A confederacy trivializer's lecturing me on triviolity. Sad.

Riviera Beach, Florida changes "Old Dixie Highway" to "President Barack Obama Highway."
Since the Confederate Flag controversy, cities across our nation are purging other symbols of our vile "heritage" of slavery, violence and racism as well. On Thursday, a cheering crowd gathered in Riviera Beach, Fla. to watch city workers remove the sign for "Old Dixie Highway" and replace it with a sign for the newly renamed "President Barack Obama Highway." The Sun Sentinel reports the City Council voted to rename Old Dixie Highway, one of Riviera Beach's main thoroughfares, back in August:

It is the second road in Palm Beach County to be named in honor of the 44th president, county officials said. Two years ago, Pahokee in western Palm Beach County renamed East First Street to Barack Obama Boulevard.

In a strong statement, Riviera Beach Mayor Thomas Masters told WPTV 5 the name "Old Dixie Highway" is an inappropriate relic from the slavery and Jim Crow eras:

"[The Old Dixie Highway is] symbolic of racism, symbolic of the Klan, symbolic of cross burnings and today we are stepping up to a new day, a new era, and replacing Old Dixie with Barack Obama, who represents change."

The Old Dixie Highway also carries many unfortunate memories for the neighborhood's mostly-black residents. For starters, it served as the dividing line between the black and white neighborhoods. Dora Johnson told reporters she'd once witnessed a Ku Klux Klan cross burning along that same road many years ago. Upon seeing the sign go up she declared, "I'm over-happy, I'm over-happy."

Crowd Cheers As 'Old Dixie Highway' Gets New Name In Honor Of Barack Obama

That was a huge mistake.

The Daughters of the Confederacy bred this huge lie about the Lost Cause and helped raise money for all those statues.

"New Orleans Mayor PURGING City’s Confederate History Because IT’S OFFENSIVE"

Wrong, another rightist lie - nothing is being "purged."

The majority of people in New Orleans are black.

Black people generally think the Confederacy was offensive, for reasons that should be really, really obvious.

Statues are put up in reverence for the people portrayed in the statues.

Black people generally do not revere people who defended something they find offensive.

Why do people not understand this? Are they uneducated?

Feelings! Thats why!

One if the monuments honors The Crescent City White League, who lead an insurrection against the reconstruction state government in 1874.

Battle of Liberty Place - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1891, the city erected a monument to commemorate and praise the insurrection from the Democratic Party point of view, which at the time was in firm political control of the city and state and was in the process of disenfranchising most blacks. The white marble obelisk was placed at a prominent location on Canal Street. In 1932, the city added an inscription that expressed a white supremacist view.

Yeah, no reason to remove that one.....if you're a white supremacist.

The mayor stated that the statues will be placed in storage until a place is found to display them in the proper, historical, context.

What's wrong with that?

Just more whining from poor, white trash illiterate Stephanie

All Staphanie knows is that Govt wants to remove white people statues and her arthritic knee jerk reaction was to scream foul. Why? She dont know.

The people who were thinking the old south would rise again must be just pulling their hair out over that one.

Old Dixie Highway replaced by the President Barack Obama Highway.

Ouch. Good for them, far past time to come into the present.
