The correct pronunciation is Mowree, but the Kiwi's, especially the older ones, pronounce it mary. This is pretty universal. I have several good Maori friends in Whangarei and they became my friend because i treated them with respect from the get go. I would proactively correct my co workers when they mispronounced the Maori names or did other like behaviors.

The youth have adopted many Maori ways, thanks in large part to the All Blacks, the national rugby team, who have been doing a traditional Maori Haka for as long as they have been around. I love this Hakla that i found as ti really shows how finally, the two cultures are coming together in a positive way.

Too, the All Blacks used to do a very Pakeha version of Te Rauparaha's haka, Ka Mate until Buck Shelford as captain insisted on it being done properly. As well, the NZ defence forces have adopted much Maori culture, the Army defining itself as Ngati Tumatauenga, the tribe of the god of war, Tu.
