The War in Ukraine is not going well for Putin. The question is, how desperate will Putin get to stay in power or defeat Ukraine? We know he will brutalize Ukrainian civilians with bombs, tanks, artillery, and missiles. But that won't stop Ukrainians from defending their homeland. So what other options will Putin consider? Nuclear weapons?

This OP is looking at the options Putin may be considering, and trying to put up a response or deterrence for the most serious.
Can NATO put up credible threats that would prevent Putin from using his nuclear weapons?

What good would an airburst do?

It maximizes the effect of the detonation.

It depends on the yield and the target. The "Little Boy" detonated about 1800 feet above Hiroshima. It was about 15KT. The same size/yield device over a Ukrainian city would end all resistance there and likely freeze the war in place. I just don't believe NATO or the U.S. would risk retaliating in kind unless he threatened another country in NATO.

Sure you can. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were occupied by the U.S. within a couple of months of the bombs detonating. Both were airbursts and left very little fallout contamination.

If Putin ordered a couple of bombs of say 5-10 KT to be detonated as an airburst over a city or a military base, the destruction would be limited in scope and it would be damned sure to wake the world up to the idea that we were at the edge of an abyss. The question is, would the U.S. or NATO take the chance of escalating it further? I don't think anyone knows the answer to that question. My guess is that DC would step back.
