Because the map looks fantastic for Putin. He's taken all of the oil/gas fields. Captured half of Ukraine's power supply. 30% of Ukraine's farmlands. Destroyed the Ukrainian economy.

What part of "Not going well" do you fucking think it is?

Russia is in this war in the Ukraine only because Zelensky constantly tried to violate treaties, join NATO, and put nukes on Russia's border.
And the claim that Putin wanted to colonize the Ukraine in to a Russian empire would be proven totally wrong if nukes were used.
Because a radioactive Ukraine would be useless to Russia as an imperial colony.

1. Not a foolish thread, its a "what if" thread, and the options are very plausible, but hopefully unlikely
2. Russia is in this war only because Putin chose unwisely to invade the sovereign state of Ukraine. Zelensky violated no treaties. No nukes are on Russia's border. The Budapest Memorandum requires the protection of Ukraine.
3. Agreed nuking Ukraine would be stupid.

I feel better already knowing that nukes are nearly off the table.

He may just be bowing to the reality that he bit off more than his military can handle for now. They can probably consolidate control of the east and south enough to have a land bridge to Crimea but if NATO continues to support Ukraine with weapons and intel, it will be a long, slow blood sponge for his troops and I don't know how long he can survive that. Once his personal survival is at stake, I don't think there is ANYTHING off the table.

IMHO if Putin orders a nuclear use...Putin is toast, that is a bridge too far, and its obvious, unless he calculates that the west or his generals won't respond in-kind and nuke his ass.

He publicly changed Russia's nuclear use doctrine a couple of decades ago. He went on a modernization binge and they now have about a 10:1 advantage in new, low-yield nukes. The idea is to grab territory and before NATO can bring forces to bear against him and push him back out, he detonates a couple of 5-10 KT devices in a location that will harm NATO but leave them with the choice of freezing the conflict in place OR running the risk of total nuclear war. A device of that size used as an airburst would not leave a nuclear wasteland. He strikes me as the kind who would be willing to take that chance to save himself.

Exactly. Incremental escalation knowing that the west would be very hesitant to push their buttons to nuke Russia is a valid bet. The point of this thread is to show that the west needs to have a credible nuclear threat, and to only way to stop Putin is to prove that what he does to the Ukes happens to the Russians. Otherwise Putin wins.

It depends on the yield and the target. The "Little Boy" detonated about 1800 feet above Hiroshima. It was about 15KT. The same size/yield device over a Ukrainian city would end all resistance there and likely freeze the war in place. I just don't believe NATO or the U.S. would risk retaliating in kind unless he threatened another country in NATO.
