PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Mayor Nutter says reports of rampant profanities by performers at this month’s “Welcome America” Fourth of July concert were somewhat exaggerated.

WPVI-TV, which broadcast the concert live, frequently cut away from the audio and video during the songs of every performer except Jennifer Hudson.

Mayor Nutter says he later compared the raw concert footage to the tape of the broadcast, and believes that the profanities were less frequent than first thought (see previous story).

Mayor Nutter yesterday released the findings of his analysis of the controversial language used by some artists at the Wawa Welcome America concert on July Fourth, a family-friendly event broadcast live on 6ABC.

Rapper Nicki Minaj and host Marlon Wayans, Nutter said, used inappropriate language, and Nutter apologized to viewers and concertgoers who were offended. But others, like the Roots and Ed Sheeran, edited their songs to avoid foul language and were still censored, creating the appearance that they were cursing.

Why would the performers be using any profanity for a 4th of July concert?

American actors are shocked when they appear on the Graham Norton show in London because of what you can get away with saying on the BBC. And they openly drink. Guess what is appropriate depends on where you are.

I think the most important thing about this story is that the mayor of Philadelphia is named "Nutter".

As for anyone who's offended by curse words, all I can say is fuck you lame-ass pussies.

So-called conservatives are all about small government until words are involved. Then Brent Bozell rides by on his white horse (branded with the Newsbusters logo), and smites the potty mouths.

That is how they speak. Most people swear.

Perhaps there should be no banned words, then there would be no profanity. It is the attempted banning of words that give them their power. Most "profane" words have synonyms that mean the same thing that are not considered profane.

This being said, the society will continue to label certain words profane no matter what I think. May George Carlin rest in peace!

Governing a modicum of decency in public is a public good. Profanity is fit for bars and talking about your chick's big throbbing nipples while playing poker.

Some people have no sense of decency regardless of children, etc.. Sick culture.

Not in public settings, and certainly not into a mic so everyone in a one mile radius can hear it.
I agree. I don't use profanity, either in public settings or in private. Using profanity at a 4th of July concert is clearly inappropriate considering that there are children present at the event.

People who are too easily offended shouldn't be allowed out in public. :D

Children shouldn't be allowed in public? Good to know.. Idiotic comment you made there.

Free speech can be a bitch, but it's still a constitutional right. Should we bar the KKK from organizing marches so our kids don't grow up racist?

Freedom of speech allows you to yell "all ******* should die" into a microphone, but that doesnt mean it wouldnt be wildly innapropriate and offensive, particularly at a 4th of July celebration where many children are present.

Im not offended by bad language, but im not deluded enough to think bad language is cool for every occasion.
