Let's take an easy one. God kills the baby of David and Bathsheba because David sent Urriah the Hittite off to get killed in battle so he wouldn't find out David was banging his wife.

And God decided that the appropriate punishment was to kill Dave's baby.

What did the Baby do wrong?

You see, this has always been the problem I have when I point out any cruelty in the thankfully not true stories in the bible. If God is good, why does he act so cruelly and capriciously.

And all the verses in the universe don't take away from there is no good reason.

The bible was written by Bronze Age savages who were victimized by nature. Where the infant mortality rate was so high they didn't even count one-month old babies in the census because they had a low chance of surviving.

Today we have NICU's and pediatrics and anti-biotics and ultrasounds, so we don't need to have women have six babies so maybe one survives into adulthood. In short, our science has made these traditions unnecessary.
