On the warpath: Two Largest Native American Tribes strengthen bans on same sex marriage

Why would a guy who claims to be for gay marriage start a thread attacking people he agrees with on the issue for not doing something he himself has not done either?

Dementia?

Because I cannot stand false outrage. You sit there and bash a certain group of people who oppose gay marriage, but let others slip by uncriticized.

I hate double standards, it shows how petty some of you are.

Dummy........you are the poster child for double standards.

When did you learn that two Native American tribes are resisting gay marriage ?

Do you hear that? No? Well, what you don't hear are the screams of homophobia from the gay left over the two largest Native American tribes banning gay marriages. I support gay marriage, but I also find this ironic. Why not apply your criticism equally?

Even if a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this spring makes same-sex marriage the law, it would leave pockets of the country where it isn't likely to be recognized any time soon: the reservations of a handful of sovereign Native American tribes, including the nation's two largest.

Since 2011, as the number of states recognizing such unions spiked to 37, at least six smaller tribes have revisited and let stand laws that define marriage as being between a man and a woman, according to an Associated Press review of tribal records. In all, tribes with a total membership approaching 1 million won't recognize marriages between two men or two women.

Several explicitly declare that same-sex marriages are prohibited. And some have even toughened their stance.

In December, just weeks after North Carolina began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the state's Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians updated its law to add language preventing gay couples from having marriage ceremonies performed on tribal land. The resolution changing the law, which passed 8-1, says court cases around the country prompted the tribe of about 13,000 enrolled members to review its own laws.

The Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma and the Navajo Nation, with about 300,000 members each, maintain decade-old laws that don't recognize same-sex marriage. Neither tribe has shown much sign of shifting.

The reservations are sovereign nations, and may make what ever declarations they want to..Since they are not affected by homo's wanting cakes from Injuns....since civil rights for whites, do not count on the land of the American Native Indians.....

Where will we find your criticism of these tribes?

Right here.

I don't support the decision.

But it remains their decision and they shouldn't be forced to change it. Nor are they obligated to follow SCOTUS rulings on the matter. It is neither my place nor yours to force them to change their minds. Believe it or not, the reason same sex marriages are banned in the Cherokee Nation are for, get this, religious reasons.
Do you deny us Cherokees the spirit of nature and the God of wisdom from our lodges?

Their land. Their laws.

Now lets wait to see the looting and rioting and trying to shut down NA businesses like casinos ON their land, ruled BY their laws. Oh. Wait. never mind.

It's still a great place for a cheese loaf......

Tribal police aren't like municipal cops. They don't play nice. Start some rioting and looting there and wake up at the bottom of a mine shaft.

Which is why there won't be much thrashing and wailing and sobbing great scalding tears over their decision by some liberals. It will quietly stay...quiet. The only ones some liberals like to pick on are the small pizza/florist businesses..you know...old women and father/daughter tiny shops.

And? They (we) live in the same country. What's good for one should be for the other. What? No boycotts? No threats?

Never heard about it before- never even really thought what Native nations laws were- why would I be criticizing something I didn't(and clearly you didn't know either).

I think that they are wrong- and they will eventually change their laws to.

The Tribes can make a buck off gambling (prostitution?) and marijuana but sodomites don't add anything to the Indian Wars victories over the White Man so at least they are honest in that respect.

I haven't called for any boycotts or threats to any State that has laws against gay marriage.

Why would I do so against Native nations?

Being one quarter Cherokee, Syrius, I make it a point to know. Either people such as yourself didn't know, or others chose to ignore it. Something like that doesn't go unnoticed, not if one pizzeria manages to bring down the wrath of the gay rights movement on their heads for expressing an opinion against catering gay couples.

Seemed to be good against that Pizzeria. But I won't assume to know the methodology behind it.

Please, unless I mention you specifically, try not to take it personally.

Because of course most of the United States follows so closely what happens in the Native nations.....

I look forward to your outrage about how your people treat gays.

So how big is your check each month?

Ugh, nobody is forcing Christian Churches to marry gays. Why is this so difficult for people to grasp?
What many on the social right grasp is that propagating the lie that Christian churches will somehow be 'forced' to accommodate gay Americans is an excellent way motivate the rightwing base, keep a wedge issue alive, and advance the conservative policy of division politics.

What is that supposed to mean? I have not applied to be a member of the Official Cherokee Nation, simply because I don't have all the pertinent information on hand nor do I live on a reservation. Though I do plan on applying soon.
