Sure, but they were democrats, that's the point. Democrats filibustered the civil rights law of 1965. Today's democrats are no different. They want a dependent class that must vote for them to keep the free stuff flowing. They have no respect for anyone of any race. Its all about power and making themselves rich.

The democrat party of the early 1900s was the conservative party. the party of low taxes and freedom. The roles have been reversed. you need to deal with that reality.

They were Democrats and they were white and they were Baptists

But their hatred of blacks was because they were SOUTHERNERS

so now all Baptists are racists? you are a sad excuse for a human being, so full of hate.
Now you are getting it

All Baptists were no more racist than all Democrats were

Only the SOUTHERN ones

are you really so stupid that you think there are and were no racists in the north and west? Or that ALL southerners were and are racists?

You, and people who think like you, are the real problem in the country today. Its your kind who are rioting to block free speech, insulting the vice president and your parents by walking out of your own commencement ceremony. Creating fake news to cover up your failures at the ballot box. Taking down monuments that record a part of history that you don't like. Generalizing about a religion, a region, or a race just proves how stupid you really are. Your bias and intolerance are no different than that of the Taliban.
Racists? Yes

A society looking to legally force Blacks into second class citizenship?

You have to go to the south for that

your ignorance never ceases to amaze. You want to see racism? go out west and see how the native americans are treated and what the tolerant western liberals have to say about them. Or go to southern cal or Miami and see how the Mexicans and Cubans are treated.

To make the stupid claim that racism only existed in the south, it just plain stupid. Have you ever been outside of your mom's basement and seen the real world?

OK, then lets not try to revise the history that shows that the KKK and most slave owners were democrats.

Not to worry --- there's no such history to revise. Your workload just got lighter and you can shift your efforts over to how FDR and/or O'bama caused those two depressions or "Hitler was a leftist" or something.

the left is trying to revise that part of history. When you troll you don't understand what the thread is about. The shift to the left in the USA began with FDR. He didn't cause the depression but his actions made it last longer. There was no depression in 2008. It was a market correction, nothing more. In fact, I made a lot of money in the market in the 08-09 timeframe, so did many others.

The Democratic Party in 1860, like the Whigs and the Know Nothings before them, shattered on the rock of Slavery.

Far right revisionist history will never gain respect in HSs or colleges in America.

OK, then lets not try to revise the history that shows that the KKK and most slave owners were democrats. Lets not hide the history that the biggest slave owner in America was a black man, or that there were more slaves in New York than in Georgia, or that slavery existed in Illinois after the civil war.

I agree with you, lets teach history as it really was, that's the only way anyone can learn from it.
The KKK and slave owners were SOUTHERNERS

Most southerners were Democrats

Of those who had a political party most white Southerners would have been Democrats in a one-party state, but the Klan didn't require any political registration. When it did dabble in politics on a large scale it got some Democrats elected in the South and some Republicans elected in Colorado and Oregon and California and Maine, and the entire state of Indiana. They got a no-party-at-all candy elected in Michigan.

The Klan wasn't a political organization anyway; it was a self-appointed social police force. It would support, or oppose, a Democrat or a Republican, depending on what served its interest in that place and time.

Blankets are always dicey. In Maine, which was as staunchly Republican as the South was Democratic, the primary Klan support was Republican and the primary Klan opposition was also Republican. In the South, replace "Republican" with "Democrat", and the same is true there. Again because that party dominated in the general population. Co-incidence, not causation. They'd agree on a local single party and disagree on the Klan.

Lotta posters here speak as if everybody in the population is registered to vote and is therefore pigeonholeable as either "Democrat" or "Republican". That's not reality.

you are simply wrong. Segregation existed in all 50 states, discrimination existed in all 50 states. when you claim that it only existed in the south, you lose all credibility.

segregation was wrong, I think we all agree on that. Discrimination is wrong, I think we all agree on that.

Where we disagree is when you on the alt left try to divide the country by geography, race, age, income, orientation, or anything else. But I think I understand, without creating division, the left has no platform and nothing to offer. Your only platform is to create hate. It showed in Berkley recently.

The desperation is obvious. You alt lefters lost and you still don't understand why.

Again you are admitting there are no laws enforcing segregation other than the SOUTH

What you are describing are social norms which were also attacked by our courts and resolved through busing, affirmative action and public accommodation laws

Laws which are still opposed by REPUBLICANS

Yes, you are full of crap, fishy. By the fifties Utah was desegregated culturally, educationally, politically, socially. Everyone could vote, and there was no housing discrimination. BYU was a private uni and could do as it wished.

The America of the fifties you remember, as bad it was racially, is only your memory: that America did not exist.

It's kind of ironic you'd call out a blanket polarization --- and then attribute it to an "alt left", which doesn't even exist.

Just sayin', you started with a worthy point and then committed the same fallacy you called out.

Actually Oregon used to have a racial-exclusion law. They're still suffering the legacy of "skinheads", even those who sport long hair, like last week.

The Klan made inroads there too. Got a Governor and a mayor elected (a Democrat and a Republican respectively)

Black Exclusion Laws in Oregon -- Oregon Encyclopedia

Let's face it -- the overall national view in the first half of this country's existence, and before its founding, was indeed racist, regardless what laws expressed it or whether slavery was abolished and when. Oregon simultaneously held that slavery would not be tolerated and neither would black people. And when lynchings were going on they went on in the midwest, in New England, even in Duluth Minnesota, about as far away from the South as you can get (the inspiration for Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" was a 1920 lynching there witnessed by his father). That reflects vigilantism rather than codified laws but it also reflects pervasive cultural attitudes of the time. And the state with the largest Klan population was Indiana. And this isn't even taking into account similar attitudes toward Native Americans, which knew no regionalism.

Stereotypes are always risky business. Here in Appalachia where I live, definitely in the South, the region (Western NC/Eastern TN) voted against secession in 1861 and remained loyal to the Union. Tennessee in 1860 voted for John Bell, whose Constitutional Union Party was anti-secession, and anti-slavery expansion. Bottom line is that "the South" is not a monolith.

We've had budget surpluses. Budgets are annual.

We've never had a budget surplus either. You and the rest, are including revenues for Social Security and Medicare. The debt increased each and every year. Do you really call that a "surplus"?
