Actually the Republican party had several factions. The Radical Republicans were one faction. The Radical Republicans opposed slavery,, they would be considered liberals today. Abe Lincoln was not a Radical Republican, nor was Thomas Corwin who wrote The Corwin Amendment that would have made slavery protected by the constitution.
